It cracks me up how pro terminology leaks into the mainstream. IEMs are in ear monitors. Not ear buds with a 4 conductor compatible remote hanging off of your left ear. Most IEMs are terminated in mini-XLR or quarter inch stereo plugs. Not 1/8th" 4 connector plugs. But it's part of that whole prosumer thing. People are happy to spend half their paycheck on items that they think are 'pro level', even though they are just goofing around.

CalaverasgrandeFrom pretty much everything I've ever seen regarding the topic... when it comes to consumer products IEM means that it fits snugly in the canal while buds sit in the outer ear. Calling these earbuds would provide no differentiation when there's a huge difference between something that goes into the canal versus sitting in the outer ear.
