I'm not much of an audiophile, but my old ath m40x's broke and I was just wondering if anyone could compare these to them. Hope its not too much to ask, thanks in advance. Also, do you 100% need an amp?

i have the M50x not the M40s but i cant try to help. these are not studio monitors; very colored on the bass-heavy side. they have excellent clarity like the M50x, but waaayyy more punch in the bass. these might not be the best for metal in this price range (i would recommend the 4XX for that), but they are fantastic for edm/rap/pop, particularly if you prefer more bass. no amp necessary, i can drive them off my phone (htc one m8) and tablet (huawei mediapad m3) perfectly fine with plenty of gain to spare. oh: these are on-ear, not over ear, but are very comfortable. more comfortable than the M50x, in my opinion. fwiw, these are one of the most *fun* pairs of headphones i own. :)

I would disagree with @motod on the metal part. I bought them for listening to metal mostly and they are magnificent - large sound stage, nice punchy bass, but not too overwhelming. Mids and highs are clear as day. They are low impedance - 37 ohm so driving them should be quite easy. I tried these against M50x and it was a joyless listening session with a very small soundstage.
