These are on ear unless you have a child sized ear. It is kinda tricky to get the earpads off without tearing up the adhesive but if you're careful you can take them off and buy some earpads off ebay that are over ear. I suggest earpads that are 90 to 95mm. They sound good but crave power. This is a great price for them btw.

kenshinescaI'd be wary about changing pads. It's a given that changing pads can alter the sound signature, but for this case the pads are by design, such as some gaps for air and non-uniform fenestration on the pads. Z-reviews also bring up the pad nature in his review of this (as he's extremely big on changing pads on everything).
Below's a shot from me of where the fenestration is.

texindusBut Z assumed that the ceramic driver is in front of those holes (~8:15 of his review), yet it's actually toward the back part of the center, facing ~10 o'clock. You can change the pads...Slater offers some detailed steps here: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/1more-h1707-triple-driver-over-ear.849824/page-18 ...plus in page 15 he detailed a mod to brighten the sound.

HecsBoxI'm all for changing pads and not saying it's not possible to change them, I'm just throwing out the wary disclaimer.

texindusconcur! The treble comes out of the pads through carefully placed holes. , would not recommend changing pads.

texindusI've A-B tested and the difference is minuscule to my ears. It's cool if you like them as on ears though. I just found them too uncomfortable to wear stock. I do agree something is lost if you throw some HM5 pads on they are too big and don't fit right, just too loose.

roxwow90-95mm round pads the most comfortable ones are these ones https://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement-ear-pads-cushions-for-all-headphones-70mm-80mm-90mm-100mm-FULL-size/123067653360?hash=item1ca7675cf0%3Am%3AmKmOkLhn6wcsrVeXk2u6EXA&var=423492554012 also Philips Fidelio L1 or L2 replacement pads work well and are a bit thinner than the above pads. Both are pretty cheap. Beats Studio 2.0 earpads also work but you will have to use the adhesive on the back of the beats pads the other options I've listed just slip over the lip of the headphones.

zep483Yeah brainwavz round would probably be too loose. Looks like those should work pretty much exactly like the ones I linked a while back.

kenshinescaThey are just barely perfect, boarding on too big, but the sound signature is mostly the same and the comfort is a HUGE difference. The 55mm opening in the smallest that would fit my large ears I think though... they definitely "squeeze" in there. I'll include a picture in a minute... Overall, the highs maybe slightly less harsh, and the bass improves with regard to integration, may loses a bit of impact... maybe... maybe... I don't know really... Hard to compare because I can't go back ;) BUT, I'm superbly happy atm though. It was worth the pain in the but, and all the goo gone ;)

zep483hi zep483, I'm thinking about changing pads tp bigger ones, did you use 95 external x 57 internal or 90 ext x 54 internal ones from aliexpress? Would you recommend them?

HecsBoxExcellent looking mods. I wished I had a extra pair of the actual Bugatti Rims look. They gave 10 of these made out of titanium to the people who bought those 10 Bugattis! But your mods DO look like the Grado cans. I'm saving the pics for later!
