The Compact Throwback

The 80Retros GB40 is a super-compact, 40-percent keyboard that’ll have you typing your way back to the good old days of gaming. Named and designed to match the original GameBoy from the ‘80s heyday of personal gaming, the GB40 comes in a few colorways, each complete with 80Retros’s 1989 keycaps to really hammer home that this thing is all about classic handhelds. Under the all-aluminum hood, the story takes a much more modern turn. You’ll find a gasket mounting structure with silicone cushioning to deliver today’s most sought-after typing sound and feel. There’s also south-facing LED lighting onboard to ensure the best possible RGB display with whatever switches you prefer—though this prebuilt comes standard with HMX Monochrome Switches. With the GB40, there’s no cheat code for style and quality—it’s here right out of the box.

The knob at back left is just decorative and held on with a magnet and replaceable with a badge. The other buttons I believe are entirely decorative to give that gamepad look.Read More

Question
The specs seem to imply this board has a wired only PCB, right? If that's the case, is the firmware VIA or VIAL compatible, preferably the latter? If VIA, is there source code available so I can port to VIAL to enable some tap dance configs? Thanks.

Thanks for your interest in this product! The PCB is wired-only and supports VIA. 80Retros will provide the necessary .json file, but the GB40 is not VIAL-compatible out of the box.Read More
