Forgive the quasi-crosspost (I posted this information in https://www.massdrop.com/buy/8bitdo-snes30-retro-gamepad, to see if that item shared the flaws of this one), but I think any retro-gamers considering this pad will find the following information useful:
I recently bought the 8Bitdo NES30 Pro (https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Controller-Classic-Joystick/dp/B01DM1VY6W/), and the dpad on it is NOT acceptable.
Here's a fast and easy way to check: Load up Contra 3 on your favorite SNES emulator. Try playing the first level. To survive, you have to lie prone a lot. On poorly made dpads, it is easy to accidentally switch from D to DR on the dpad, causing your dude to get up and start running (with his gun pointed diagonally down). This will generally get you killed fast.
The original SNES gamepad did not have this issue, obviously. The 8BitDo NES30 Pro failed this test. Playstation gamepads pass the test. The new xbone gamepad also passes the test (about frickin time you made a useable dpad, Microsoft).
TLDR: I cannot recommend this gamepad for any retro-gaming that requires a good dpad. The analog sticks are nice, though.

gibbousmoonThat is really a shame, I was looking at maybe getting this controller about a month back and was excited to see a drop on this being announced this morning, but looking at some reviews, it does indeed seem like the d-pad is a piece of shit which sucks because this is the only reason I was looking to get a retro style controller like this, to have a good d-pad. I already have a gamecube controller that I use for everything else but the d-pad on that controller is straight trash for active gaming, and using the joystick is not so hot after a while when you need precise inputs for games like classic shmups.

gibbousmoonIt's not a piece of shit (and nowhere near as bad as the poor excuse for a dpad on the xbox360 gamepads), but the lack of differentiation between UDLR and their respective diagonals makes it unacceptable for certain games. It depends on how the controls are coded. The scenario I described above could be that of an inadequately precise dpad exposing the flaws in a game's controls, or a game's control scheme exposing the flaws in a gamepad, or (most likely) a combination thereof. So Contra plays like shit, but Ninja Gaiden plays fine.
I have to recommend the xboner gamepad for Windows gaming, and a Playstation gamepad for Android gaming. Not sure about Apple products; I was hoping to use this gamepad with emulators on my iPad, but it looks like that's out.
