Yes. On higher end stereo systems , the control unit (inputs, volume, balance, inputs, switching, etc. ) controls are separate from the amplifier. This control unit is called a preamplifier. You need a dedicated power amplifier to connect to it and then to the speakers. The reason why they do this is so you can build a high quality preamplifier and a high quality power amplifier separately, focusing on making the best possible sound. If you want even better sound, get two mono power amps for each channel.

bsatowafter checking out the specs on this adcom unit... can one really consider it "high quality"??? their preamps from the 90's blow this current gen away....

shangI don't believe the specs are bad. But you are right, the GFP-750 was one of their best. However, the bandwidth is wider on this one and the phono preamp is pretty good.

bsatowthe pre amp from the 90's I was referring to is the adcom 555 mkii.... while the bandwidth is wider on the GFP-815 ... 10hz-100khz vs 5hz-85khz at the high level and 20hz-80khz vs 5hz-60khz phono stage .... the phono pre amp on the GFP-815 is horrible.. its S/N ratio is a poor >64db mm, 55db mc and its thd is .03% mm, .15% mc vs the 555 mkii's >90db phono and thd is .02% In fact, w/ the exception of the higher top end bandwidth(that no one can hear)... the 555 mkii has the specs that shows its a cleaner and simpler design w/ better componentry... in all categories of measurement.... what phono preamps are you comparing the 815 to, to think its phono section is any good?

shangThe GFP-750 is a far superior preamp in every relevant way, designed by Nelson Pass and earning a coveted Stereophile Class A rating among preamps costing many times as much. The listening is where it matters. They still sell for upwards of $1000 nearly two decades later but I'll be keeping mine.

Mark3DNelson Pass had nothing to do with any Adcom preamp. His magic touch was on the 535 power amp. Regardless, the 750 seems to be the highest rated Adcom preamp made.
