Does anyone know how this compares to the Javapresse Coffee grinder? Does anyone have experience with both? Thanks in advance!

Check out the one from Handground. I like it over Hario's Skerton and Slim and also the Zassenhaus Panama.

Are there plastic parts in the mechanism? I've had a couple manual burr grinders and over time the plastic in the mechanism cracks and the grinder stops working.

What is the draw to use one of these daily? As opposed to an even a cheapo electric grinder.
We got a portable hand coffee grinder last year, and it takes so long that I hope to never need it. -- For camping I'll pre-grind before we go. So it's basically relegated to emergency coffee when the power goes out.

Aye, our home grinder is a 2 yo Bodum Bistro Burr Grinder, used 3+ times a day. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043095WW/ -- which really makes me question some of those reviews that claim broken burr housings within weeks.
Although our travel grinder is a cheapo $20 electric blade grinder.

CrashNBurnThe enemy of coffee ground by electric grinders is HEAT. Grinders produce heat as a natural byproduct of the grinding process. Some grinders are worse than others. If you have to buy and electric pick one that uses a "burr" system, of which the "conical" type is the lesser of two evils (conical and flat burr). The third type is the inexpensive blade grinder which doesn't so much as grind but, rather, beats the crap out of the beans by spinning at high revs. Heat build up is highest with blade grinders. However, as can be expected, even among burr grinders there are variations like speed and grind size capabilities.
That being said; the absolute best coffee I've ever had was ground with a hand grinder many years ago by a good friend. I recently tried a manual grinder, myself, after going through several electric grinders in search of a happy compromise. I was startled at how good the coffee was and how close to that early experience I had back in the 60s. Bottom line; it's all about the taste and what you have to do to get there.

Without trying this, it seems just like the really cheap ones that come from China. Same design and everything. I am happy with my hario slim mill, but when I get something else I want to be sure it's a upgrade

tacomanI have the Porlex Jp-30 and have to agree with the comment about the Hario, if I am seeing something else I want higher quality and that has yet to happen.

Does anyone know if the grinder will fit inside an aeropress plunger?

can anyone comment on how stable the burrs are and how consistent the course grind is? all of the other hand grinders at this price create inconsistent course grinds due to the burr wiggling around, is that an issue here?

dolkborIt gives a consistent grind and basically quick and easy to use. The coarsest setting could be a touch coarser but if you adjust the measurement ring a touch it makes a perfect pour over for me each morning

Only four settings? I'd say avoid at all costs. Spend the $7 for a hario slim plus, or grab a skerton pro.

I picked this up on the last drop and so far I'm pretty happy with it. I bought it to replace a Hario grinder that I have because this one takes up a lot less space in my cabinet. I like the sleek design and although the cut-out window is some random, weird shape, it does allow me to see how much I have left which my old one didn't. This one also cuts a lot faster and I think the narrow cylinder shape really helps that.
Actually doing the grinding is a bit of a pain, literally. The hard edges on the arm and the smooth knob on the end aren't very practical. The edge of my hand scrapes against the arm so I slide my grip up the knob which makes it easier to slip off. I've also found that the best way to grind is to hold the body up off the counter because the very small and very slippery base does not like to stay on the counter. Fortunately, it gets the job done so fast that most of these problems are brief, but if you have any issues with grip or if comfort is important, then skip this item.
Overall it's a 4 out of 5. I'll probably add some clear silicone to the base to make my life a little easier and the cut-out window should just be an oval. You should be able to tell by looking at it that it isn't built for comfort but it is a nice, sleek, space-saving design and good grinder.

JBI_chiDid you have the Hario Skerton grinder? I have that one and have found it pretty difficult to hold on to and grind consistently since it's a weird shape, and the hopper is open and allows the beans to bounce out some times. Curious if you've found this to be a better grinder for ergonomics and efficiency compared to the Hario.

natakuYes - that's the exact one I have. I'm probably going to stick with the ad-hoc one. I find it to be a lot more efficient even if it's less ergonomic and the trade-off feels worth it.

Anyone who got the drop have issues with the grinder and the container basket? The adjusting grind wheel doesn't come off and it's annoying to pour the grinds out with the wheel stuck to the basket
