Would really love to know what parts exactly are inside the AK380 or other overpriced AK dap that make them so ridiculously expensive? MSRP $3500? the name I'm sure is worth part of the cost.
Guess I find it hard to believe, honestly, that the AK380 is that much better than say a DAP in the 600-1000 range, and it isn't even running stock android. Just MHO...

mayorblurpsAlot of marketing and brand recognition. Ever wondered why apple can charge thousands for an iMac even though the specs are worse than PC's cheaper.

IcywolfeOh no doubt about the marketing and branding. I just legitimately want to know about the internals on this dap or similar from AK. Well aware of the specs on something like a MBP vs a similar PC and the cost differences. But there's more to this than just brands and marketing.

mayorblurpsLoads of pixie dust. People will say the internals are higher quality. But for the most part the electrical signal running inside will be in the digital format until it reaches the dac. Not matter what those die hard audiophiles think digital signals don't interact with surrounding noise. Just like how your USB has two states that it reads or it doesn't. And some will state that power it cleaner because of some useless pathways. However the power is from a rechargable battery which is fairly clean. The thing is due to the low price of the O2 dac/amp combo a good bit of people shunned it. That was made by a person who is objective. However people will rate amps with far worse tech inside higher because of the higher cost.

mayorblurpsI forgot to add. The reason why you should buy this is the ak4490 dacs. Those dac are very much a luxury based dac. As the signature is very very pleasant to listen to.

IcywolfeI agree with you about the O2 combo. I remember reading the objective explanation by the mysterious engineer NwWavGuy back in 2011. I wish we knew more about him, but hat tip to him for open sourcing his design that so many people enjoy! I have JDS labs' portable C5D and it's a great little piece of kit. Interesting is that the Altoids amp used to be super popular because it works, it's easy to make or buy and it's cheap. But now people head towards the more expensive stuff, which is fine. I have no doubt the chord mojo sounds better than the C5D because of the updated technologies in it as compared to the simplicity of the portable Objective combo, especially because of rise of hi-res files and streaming.
I don't recall the Objective combo being shunned? Maybe just skeptical that something so relatively inexpensive could be that good? Either way I wish I had some kind of sound or electrical engineering background!

mayorblurpsIt was semi shunned due to the cost and how DIY it was. People said it bad quality. However many could guess that most who shunned it liked their multithousand dollar audio gear.
