Are these new stock with the better plastic or old stock that are prone to breaking?
This has been an ongoing debate for the better part of past 13 pages. I would skim through the past comments. People's opinion seems to be split.
Just got mine from last drop. They definitely have the "bump" and serial number well above when the improvements were made to the design. These are a steal at this price.
Do you mind posting a photo or two of the bump, if possible? It's not that we don't believe you, but I believe many of us including myself would like more evidence to prove that our drop had models of different build.
I thoroughly believe that Will owes us at least an explanation as to why some of these models are not like he had written they would be.
just to chime in with the others, mine's is the new stock with the mysterious "bump" and high serial.. I've been using it daily and no issues so far, considering the sound, portability, and the look & feel of the significant number of metal components, I consider it a bargain for $130 (assuming you get one without the old flaw); MSRP is $450, Amazon used to sell these for $350 a few months ago, $240 a few weeks ago and $187 now
some people don't have the bump, and some say that AKG mentioned that a new plastic composite was used to fix the issue but didn't mention the bump
I wonder if AKG sources the plastic piece from multiple manufacturers and that to strengthen the piece, different methods were used depending on the capabilities of the manufacturer.. perhaps one was able to increase the structural integrity by putting in the bump, another by changing the compound - who knows..
Regardless, there is no definitive conclusion that could be inferred from the input volunteered by the massdrop community - due to the serial #, it would seem that these are too new to have the old flaw and there is a 2 year warranty, so in the worst case you would get another pair though that might take a few weeks
The bump is easily missed unless you're looking for it or feeling carefully. You have to catch the light on just the right angle to see it. I was able to get a picture that you can kind of make it out on.
