Would I need an amp to make the most use of these headphones?

no.
On this drop: I'm not sure I'm ready to try this out against my m50x since it has this plagued hinge breaking. Hopefully someone or massdrop can tell about the warranty of these thing and how long.

These are the new style, confirmed on an earlier drop. They fixed the issue with the hinges.

after checking the comment section, you might be right with the new bump to reinforce it. Will try and join the drop then.

You need an amp to "make the most" of any headphones. These are rated at 32Ω and can be driven to decent volume by most mobile devices, but a better amp will always result in better sound quality. Whether or not it's likely that you'll notice the improvement is a different matter entirely.

An amp is not mandatory. For me these work fine on my Fiio X3 II, but when I plug them into my Schiit Lyr 2 they really come alive.

Absolutely! Anyone who tells you a audiophile headphone won't see better performance while being amped has no idea what they're talking about whatsoever!

X3 II has an amp section. Both of your sources are amped...
