Really, really dumb question, but you can plug in the cord on either the left or right side right? Can you plug in a mic or another set of headphones on the side you aren't using? It wouldn't be practical but it's just a thought.

You can plug cord on either side. Pretty sure you won't be able to connect mic to the other. It's a 3 pin connector reserved purely for audio source. I haven't tested chaining but I would strongly recommend against it.
If you need to connect more stuff you may use an audio splitter (cable one to not put any more strain on a socket). But please keep in mind! Anything passive (non-powered but cheapo/getto solution) will impact sound quality/loudness a lot and you are in a world of pain if connected devices aren't the same (their power:loudness ratio).
