These are nice headphones and all, but they're far from bass heavy. To me the have a very neutral sound with a wide soundstage. So if you're looking for heavy bass look elsewhere. Also, you WILL need a headphone amp to get these to their full potential. I have a very high end motherboard and even at 100% the onboard sound can't power these as loud as I'd like.

Jeremy1998Agree on needing an amp for them to reach full potential. However, it doesn't have to be a big, expensive one. I am driving these with a $26 Topping NX1 and the sound is glorious.

Jeremy1998thats odd, my Crosshair V Formula-Z has no problem powering these to a level i would call "to damn loud"......same with my note3 and other players....
just a suggestion, update the drivers for the onboard audio, a while back i noticed my mothers laptop was having volume issues with headphones...windows update replaced the realtek driver with one from the update server.....as soon as it rebooted with the latest realtek driver.....easily 3x as loud at the same setting..(wtff?)
I would suggest you consider an O2dac/amp it would allow you to use the optical out on your board to feed the amp that would just be used for your headphones.
another option would be something like the FIIO E17 that works as a usb soundcard(dac) and amp.

UnaSalusVictusI'm running a Rampage IV Extreme, so the built in sound isn't quite up there with your Crosshair-Z board. I'll definitely check for new drivers though, thanks!

Jeremy1998no problem m8, i been there, i infact setup a techsupport forum that we just put back online, ashentech dot com if you wana take a look, talk, ask for suggestions.
and yeah, honestly today, unless your doing audio production, a quality motherboards audio should cover your needs, gigabyte asrock or asus tend to all do a good job at making their audio decent, hell even biostar did a good job last time i owned one of their lower end boards(actually rmaa tested better then my buddy's top end asus at the time...everybody was shocked as my board was over 200bucks cheaper then his...hehe
anyway, glad it helped updating drivers yourself makes a huge, NEVER let windows update drivers.

Jeremy1998I'm running a RIVE too and both E10K and ODAC+O2 sound much better than the on board sound. I never imagined DAC would make that much of a difference compaired to ALC898.
