Are theae headphones good for gaming? Is space awareness and base good?
If you need closed back there aren't many better headphones for soundstage in this price range. Even at the $170-200 range you aren't going to find much better. The ath-a900x or newly released a990z (in the US) is really the main contender. In the US it's hard to get the a900x under $180 right now and the 990z is $220... They're very different headphones compared to 553 from what I've read. Some prefer the the akg some the AT.
Okay, what about in the 100-150 range? Ive been looking at 558s but im not too sure.
For closed headphones, they're pretty good. However, personally I've switched to the SHP9500s since they're bright like these AKGs but seem to have a bit more bass overall and are more comfortable(ears don't touch drivers on the SHP9500). I can wear these K553s for a good 4-6 hours before I need a break/breather. If you need a set of closed headphones, these are great. Otherwise, consider the Philips SHP9500, which are only $59.99 on newegg's ebay right now.
My friend has a set of Sennheiser G4me Zeros, which are tweaked 558/598s, and they are very comfortable and sound quite good as well.
imho you can't really go wrong with any of these. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.
Yeah it completely depends if you want closed or open. Open will usually be better if you play in a quiet environment... If there is any noise where you play closed can help a lot. I personally like closed better. Even though its not close to loud where I play I find the isolation of closed cans to help me focus more... Or almost not focus more if that makes sense... I don't feel I have to focus as much on the sound because of the isolation.
