Looking for a suggestion for a set of travel 'phones. Something decent, isolates me from the surrounding environment (plane/train) but also not to bulky (I understand that there is a compromise regarding bulk)
Would these fit the bill ? Also reading some QC issues regarding the pads ?

MickeyBlissThese are good and isolate decently well, but are pretty bulky. I would honestly say these are more a pair for the office rather than traveling around. It definitely isn't made for that because of the 10 ft cable and the lack of foldability and a travel pouch. These do look great and I would not mind rocking this outside at all especially after braiding the cable down, but it is kind of a pain to walk around with when it's not actually over your ears. Some people seem to have problems with pads wearing down...I've never had this issue on any of my cans but I don't sweat around the ears much and I'm suspecting this would be the primary cause of the pleather breaking down over time. Either way, the pads are replaceable so even if it happens, it's not that big of a deal.
I would actually recommend something like the beyerdynamic DT770 pro instead around this price range for travel. Probably the 32 ohm version as that comes with a shorter cable suited for traveling, pleather pads for less leakage/more isolation, and should be easy to drive with a mobile/portable device. I believe all the versions also come with a travel pouch also so you can store and handle it easier when not using it.

EinTheVarianceAnd it has more bass, meaning the sound will not get drowned out easily, while on the go.

forget MSRP, often they're very misleading. The listed MSRP on massdrop for either pair is the same anyway. Anyway, I haven't heard the HE350 so I'm not the best person to ask, but they're kind of two different beasts. One is a closed back pair (K553) while the other is open back (HE350). Both are fairly good for the price although I would say that the K553 is the better buy in terms of closed cans around this price point. There are just so many cheap and fairly good open cans.
I guess it comes down to whether you are using these at home or outside. If outside, you'd probably want a closed back pair because open back design means whatever you are listening to will leak out and It won't isolate noise either. If you will only be listening at home and sound leak doesn't matter...then it kinda depends on what type of music you listen to. Closed back cans are generally better at reproducing the low end impact of music (aka the thump of the bass) and are not as good with the sound staging (the image of the different instruments and the positional cues of where they are relative to you). With that said, the K553 I feel does the best job I've heard with sound staging at around this price range, for a closed can anyway. Open back cans are generally better at sound staging but the thump of the bass will be recessed. If you listen to music with stringed instruments or vocal focused tracks, an open back tends to be superior in these areas. As I've said, I haven't head the HE350, so I can't comment on its actual sound, but given that they are based on the HE300 which a lot of people don't consider as good, I'm not sure I'd consider it anyway. Some alternative options for open cans around the price range would be the Sennheiser HD558/HD598 for a warmer open sound or the Audio Technica AD500X/AD700X/AD900X for a more airier open sound.

Depends on your gaming environment as well. If there is substantial external noise, the advantages of getting a closed-back headphone could outweigh its disadvantages- which is usually a congested soundstage. Not that the K553 has this problem though XD
