Made it to Pearl City, Hawaii!
OMG international orders are arriving already! I should check my local post office on Monday.
Hawaii is technically USA so don't get your hope up. I'm trying not to myself. :(
Hawaii isn't international. It's part of the USA.
Over seas then? Sure it may be part of the US, but it still needed to cross the sea to get there.
The important thing here is that it could be shipped as a UPS domestic package, which means faster shipping and that it doesn't need to clear customs or anything.
Correct. Mine will have to clear customs once in US and then in AUS. No tracking is kind of worrying me. I don't buy anything above $20 from international locations without tracking. What happens if item gets lost in transit? Who foots the loss? I am happy to pay extra for tracking. If I knew I wouldn't have tracking, I wouldn't have ordered in the first place. Imo, the risk of losing a shipment out weighs any financial savings.
well that is true, have you ever lost a package though? I've bought many things from international sellers and I've never lost a package, MD would probably foot the bill I think but idk.
shipping without tracking is a gamble, but you can still lose items with tracking ya know.
Australia Post has a reputation of misplacing parcels, or better, they will even leave registered signed parcels outside the property without making anyone sign, which then gets stolen. With a tracking I can -keep an eye out on knowing when it's due for arrival. -if it gets lost, can track where it got lost and who to blame. I usually ship using a courier, costs me some money but way more reliable than letting it pass through AusPost.
For example, I have been waiting on a document to come to my house for the last 1 month, it was re-sent thrice, express registered post, all the 3 times Auspost said no one was at home, they left note in letterbox and we didn't collect so it went back to sender. Where as my Mrs works from home, so she is always home, we have two dogs, if there's a post delivery man, trust me, we will know, and we check the letter box every day, never got a note. Its being re-sent 4th time now. :|
Tracking for international packages isn't available. We offered it (in the early days of MD) and people just complained that it cost too much. We're looking at adding it back as a check-out option in the near future.
To date, we've had a very very low package "lost" incidence rate for international orders. It's our responsibility to have the package delivered to your doorstep after we've collected your money, if it gets lost or "lost", it's our responsibility to send a new package to you.
Luckily/gladly, our community is very tight and we haven't had any fraudulent "lost" package claims yet, but it's only a matter of time as we grow.. We'll have to figure something out at that point.
Attaching a tracking-number to an international package is expensive and a fixed-cost (i.e. 25 bucks no matter what the weight of the package is), and it's going to be a tough pill to swallow for lower priced purchases.
Canadian orders are tracked, so we actually charge more for Canadian shipping than Australian shipping (which also leads to confusion & complaints)..
weren't the shipping costs to Germany just $16 ? This isn't much actually. Shouldn't you simply filter out those who claimed it's so expansive ? What's the point of filtering everyone ? Those who are fine with it got a deal and the others, who cares ?
its $25 on top of that $16 you paid, so $41
also what do you mean "filter out those who claimed its so expensive" and "whats the point of filtering everyone?"
I'm in Canada and I didn't get a tracking number... Although I didn't find the shipping cost to be unreasonable.
Thanks for the reply Mark.
Yeah an user option to add tracking would be good i think. Offload the entire tracking cost which is charged to you towards them. If the user doesn't want tracking, they don't opt for it. And it also is a risk mitigation process of some sort on your behalf for the 'lost' packages. Maybe adding a signature on delivery option as mandatory (even for shipments which doesn't have tracking) might help MD in bringing that risk factor down more?
You guys are doing an awesome job with the transparency of the entire process. Kudus for that.
I think he means just because some users complained previously, don't enforce it on everyone. If someone doesn't want to pay for tracking, they got a better deal with only 15 bucks shipping. And if there's a paranoid customer like me, I can pay the extra fees and sleep through the nights watching my shipment's every move :)
International shipping costs for this drop were heavily subsidized by our marketing department. Similarly, shipping for US customers isn't really "free". I'd say true cost of shipping these internationally is about 25-30 and another 25ish for tracking (5 bus day delivery). Paying 55 dollars to ship a 200 dollar purchase starts to be a tough pill to swallow.
Mark, can you check for me if my order is shipped? I'm completely lost here. Thanks
It's in the works, also our international tracking prices have become less expensive over time.
Human psychology often works in a weird way...
"I want it... Sweet, only 15 bucks for shipping. Oh but it doesn't have tracking. Oh tracking is 25 dollars more? 40 dollars for shipping?? Wtf what a rip off. I'm not going to bother buying it with this sketchy no-tracking option."
Versus not offering tracking as an option just ends up being "sweet, only 15 dollars for shipping. No tracking? Oh well, at least it's only 15 bucks, I'll buy it."
Regardless it's still a feature on the near horizon. The above situation will also be less pronounced with new tracking prices vs the ones we had available to us 18 months ago. Increasing your volume 20x will do that :)
(One more note is that tracked international packages are effectively guaranteed to have customs surcharges on them. Non-tracked often slip through.)
So it's overall not as simple as a few API calls and printing different labels ;)
Think it will be great if you do add a tracking option in the future. Give us buyers the option too. Yes $15 for no tracking is fantastic + the slight chance of slipping past customs. I think this will be most commonly used, but there's times when faster tracked shipping is just necessary.
We in Aussieland are safe that way :) Goods shipped with a value of up to $1000 does not cost any duty fees etc. :)
its the same here, items will be left at door without any form of notification for items that has no tracking, anyone can pick it up when both my wife and I are at work. I currently have 2 massdrop that was shipped without tracking(totalling around 250$ or so), I am not even sure if the first one has already went missing.
At least the Graffiti sleeve are shipped with tracking by the vendor, I do not have confidence in buying any more drop that is fulfilled by massdrop.
Agreed. The reason I choose Massdrop a lot of times is the shipping. The Datamancer drop you guys had was +50 shipping if ordered through Datamancer. The Royal Glam wrist rest + Vortex PBT caps I ordered would have cost ~40 shipping through mechanicalkeyboards.com but for here it was $7 + $20 if I recall correctly. For this drop though, I would have actually wanted some tracking as the Philippines is known to have a very corrupt customs office. The chance of someone in customs stealing a package increases if the package is untracked.
I honestly hope your parcel arrive safely.
still, an option is better than not offering it at all, isn't it ? Especially considering the exclusive collection aspect AND the fact that these cans are still massive bargains compared to regular European prices. E.g. the K702 cost 290$ in Germany !
This and even wit tracking it still is a bargain for European conditions. We usually pay 15-20% more than Americans for the same product.
