any planar headphone on the market destroys these...... but they were my gateway drug to audiophile stuff. Buy them if you just have stuff like the m50x or worse. They'll be an improvement.

Uzuzuany? in what? I've had the T20RP mk3, HE400, and HE400i and while there are differences here and there, none of them "destroyed" the K7XX aside from maybe the linear textured bass. Even then, the K7XX extends surprisingly low for an open back dynamic. None of the planars I've listed beat the K7XX in soundstage either (I don't think any of my headphones do, aside from the HD 800)

UzuzuI like " they were my gateway drug to audiophile stuff ". I have collected 10 headphones in a short period including this K7xx! The lowest price one Philips SHP9500. HD600 is my current top high-end headphones, together with HE400i. But I still feel not getting there audiophile, far far... "Audiophile" is an addictive drug!

EinTheVarianceOut of all the headphones you listed yeah, the 400i do destroy the k7xx. Deeper bass extension, higher top extension, mids aren't recessed like they are on the k7xx. Speed is insanely faster and it retrieves way more detail. Sure the soundstage isn't as wide, but wide soundstages aren't better, just someone's preference. I like to feel involved WITH the music, so an intimate soundstage like the 400i's is much better, imo. Especially because positioning is nearly perfect too.

EinTheVarianceHave you ever tried Philips SHP9500? If yes, could you share your observations in terms of sound stage and other aspects? Thanks in advance

Kavaljityea, but I personally didn't like the SHP 9500 at all. Missing subbass with a slight midbass bloat to make up for it makes it sound artificial, a substantial dip in the upper mids that sucks the life out of vocals, and peaks in the treble area, notably the 5khz and 10khz makes it a very thin, bright sounding pair that is sibilant at times. Detail is in line with the price range, and soundstage isn't notably wide for having such a thin sound. Hell I preferred the PortaPro over the SHP 9500 despite how dark sounding that headphone is.
I'd actually recommend saving a bit more for an HD 598 for a warmer sounding option or the K612 for a bright leaning alternative.

Kavaljitone of the widest soundstage, relatively well controlled deep bass with a nice impact, with a nice bump in the upper mids to even out the dip in the lower mids. It's a much more coherent sounding headphone. Depending on where you are, you may want to look into the K712 also, which has a cleaner bass and a more refined mids, definitely worth it for $30-40 more (again, depending on where you are).

EinTheVarianceI think it really depends on what kind of music you are listening. I like pop, jazz, choir and classical. I think that the number one factor is that you have to listen "well recorded" music, otherwise you can hardly enjoy your expensive headphones. As far as the differences among the "good" headphones, I can hear their differences but can hardly tell the differences significantly better or worse. Personally, I do think SHP9500 and MDR7506 are good headphones and enjoy them, and both are below USD100. I believe they are the king of performance/price ratio!
BTW, newegg on ebay is selling SHP9500 now at USD49 FS.

michaelye168yea, of course there are preferences so YMMV Out of the 4 genres you have listed, I listen to pop and classical and did not find the SHP9500 particularly good, especially pop with female vocals. Source isn't an issue as I own and have had many pairs many times better than it as a point of reference. Sure you could do much worse in the sub $100 area, but it's my opinion that you are better off spending slightly more for a better sound at those prices. I won't comment on the MDR7506 as I have not heard those. If you really want price/performance, you are better off with chifi IEMs/earbuds at the sub $100 level IMO.

Djdanielwell that's fine, I'm certainly not here to start a fight or anything, just had to question the "any planar headphone on the market destroys these" statement. The K7XX is definitely not a perfect headphone either by any means, but they are competent at the price point.

EinTheVariancePlanar sound different just like any headphone not better.. It is really redundant to put the word "better" than "those" when you could mention the best headphones in the world. Yeah there are some cheap planars that are not as nice as the 7xx..

DjdanielI have absolutely zero bias. I own a k712 at this moment and an he400i. Do you need pictures? From a technical standpoint the 400i destroys the k7xx's and my k712s. And it should. It has nothing to do with bias. I specifically said it was my preference on details such as soundstage and mids. K7XX is a good headphone, for the price but there are so many better HPs for just a little more. I guess when you disagree with reality I become biased when it comes to discussion. Thanks.

UzuzuHow much are the $400i? Your reality maybe.. Disagree as much as you want that's the beaty of opinion. Last thing though, I hope you do realize your biases.

EinTheVarianceI can hear their differences and when I compare them, I intend to make myself to believe the more expensive ones sound better. When I do not compare them, they all sound good to me in one or other genre. They are just different! I have HD600, 400i, T90, K7xx, m50x, K553, HD598cs, 7506, 9500, ... price high to low. For DAC/Amp, I have LG V10, little dot MKII, Fiio E17k and DragonFly Black. I probably will start to sell some of them.
On the comfort aspect, K7xx > T90 > 400i > HD600 ... 9500 is pretty comfort but just a bit loose on my small head.

KavaljitSoundstage can only be descriptive, there is no measure. I would say K7xx > HD600 > T90 > 400i. To me, Detail is the most important, that is the "Wow" factor first time I listen on HD600.

Aftermanth600/900 pads (because they pick up sub-bass better than any leathers). Really fills the 400i out. It's a bit more pronounced but still neutral, just more noticeable. Honestly even better than hd650s out of my tube amp, lol.
