For anyone interested in gaming with these, you should maybe reconcider. The sound quality is excellent and soundstage is WIDE but the small emphasis on high mid and treble areas seems to bring up any flaws in sound quality VERY EASILY. For example, CSGO is practically unplayable because the gun firing sounds are absurdly low quality and get distorted to the level of giving me a headache under 5 minutes. I have Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro's with modmic which were my main phones before, and now they've retired to gaming headset status (and for metal/electronic music for that lower end emphasis) as K7XX kick their ass in just about any music listening purposes.
Are you using and amp? And I wonder if there is any sound quality adjustments that can be made, i'll have to check it out tonight. I currently use some Astro A40s for gaming, but picked up a set of these because I've been wanting some AKG Q 701s for awhile, and these sound like they're even better. I was planning to use them gaming as well though...
amp or not, if the sound quality is bad, the akg will emphasis it and you can tell it right a way. there is no adjustment in the world can fix a bad source, period. and if you read someone mentioned a page back, the k7xx is just on par with the q701. so, this really is nothing special.
I've read multiple audiofile level reviews that say the sound of the K7XX is superior to the Q701, they have been custom tuned to address the lack of warmth. The K7XX is based off the 702 anniversary edition which was already superior to the Q701, and the lack of bumps in the headband is a valuable improvement imo.
if you have read that many reviews, you should know that a q701 + k712 pads is the same as the k702 65th. so they are pretty much the same thing and i won't called one is superior than the other, period. yes, they made these cans with heavier bass. but is it for everyone? doubtful. i won't use akg for any bass heavy because that's not what akg is for, period.
as other had mentioned, they are pretty close to each other, when k7xx having heavier bass which i don't like (it's not like the q701 is lack of bass). i doubt they touch anything beside added the extra bass.
also, there are plenty of mods that can fixed the leather strap bumps problem, so it's really not a big deal.
You could always try to remove the inner foam ring thing squeezed between the ear pads and the headphones themselves, that might reduce bass slightly/increase highs if you think they are too bassy. Also there was the one guy who did a review testing between the different pads, and the most substantial difference was because of the denser foam used in the annie pads, when he swapped the annie pads to the regular on the K7XX it sounded almost(if not) exactly like the Q701 soundwise. The thing is that buying a pair of Q701's separate annie pads is more expensive than buying the K7XX itself, and a substantial amount of money less from what the K712's cost at best normally. That's the main benefit of the K7XX's
and that doesn't make the k7xx sounds superior than the q701, that's my point. sorry, but remove the pads also change how the cans sounds and i don't want to deal with that mess to figure out how to make it less bassy while maintain the same sound quality. just too much trail and error involve.
if i want to do a diy headphone, i will grab the fostex rp series in the first place and still save money after all the stuffs to mod it.
I'm using an amp. Cannot say for Q701s but overall the experience for gaming with high quality headphones can be quite inconsistent taken the sound quality. Especially with phones that are demanding in terms of source quality
IMO the depth of bass on K7XX is pretty much perfect and if it was any weaker, I'd been dissapointed. K712 pads aren't free either, so it's still a bargain compared to Q701
why everyone got twisted or butt hurt when i said q701 is on par with the k7xx. the matter of fact is the q701 and k7xx basically using the same driver, when the only difference are the pads. "IT DO NOT MAKE THE K7XX SOUND SUPERIOR THAN Q701" and that's MY POINT the whole time. did i said anything about pricing of the k7xx nor the q701 + k712 pads? no. did i said that a q701 +k712 pads is a must? no, so don't put words in my mouth and get things twisted. in fact, some even put the q701 pads on the k7xx instead. so go figure.
like i said before, if i want bassy sounds, i won't use the akg, period.
Thanks for the insight, I have the K553's and for the price quite happy. I was considering these but your logic is so right. Already I have noticed that 90% of the stuff I listen to has crap quality. I am using an amp also so my logic was to upgrade further? lol, I'm an idiot. Just saved me some cash, thanks.
