My k7xx arrives Saturday, and I'd like to avoid missing a potential defect from the get go... I'd also like to avoid reading over 8000 comments :D
Could someone give a general overview of known symptoms to watch out for, and maybe some sure fire ways to test for the symptoms? If mine needs an RMA, I'd like to submit it right-away. Thanks in advance!
Yup, same here. I'm thinking the best way to tell is to just listen. Play stuff you are familiar with and listen for any rattling or distortion you know is not present in the recording. Never mind "burn-in", it is of no concern in this case.
Something tells me that I don't think there is much cause for concern beyond what is normal. I think the majority of folks are happy with these cans and not experiencing issues. (With over 10k of these things made now, your going to get the occasional unit with problems, but I have not seen many complaints).
Here is what I have uncovered about the issue. The drivers AKG uses in their entire line of series 7 cans are susceptible to cone break-up with certain low frequencies at high volume. If it happens, within the first 2 years you can have them repaired under warranty. In my opinion though, if your playing them at that level your asking for damage to both the cans and your ears and your next move should be to an ear doctor.
