I have a K712 Pro (same 62 ohms as K7XX) and a Magni 2 Uber / Modi 2 Uber stack. The Magni has absolutely no problem driving the K712 well beyond listenable levels with the gain set on Low. In fact, you typically set gain to low for higher-impedance headphones, and set it to high for low impedance ones. The gain switch is there to give the volume knob some headroom, not to make up for inadequate power.
FWIW I also have a Beyerdynamic 880 Pro 250 ohm version and the Schiit stack has no problem driving that either. But I rarely listen to those as the K712s just sound better.
Wow, your word explains my puzzle which exists for really a long time. I have Modi/Magni 2 Uber. While I find that the gain set not only simply add volume, but also "other things". I can not describe that by myself for my insufficient experience in listening to music. But I did notice some difference other than volume. Year, "headroom" is one aspect. Another aspect I would say "clearance". Much more extension to the high frequency and low frequency.
