Ok! Well the AKG M220 headphones have landed safely in one piece, through sheer luck all the way from the US to Oz with no padding in the packaging, just the AKG box inside another cardboard box. They look sweet and sound fine through both sound proof booth focusrite scarlett 2i4 audio interface and plugged into iPhone 6 Plus. Nice sound definition across the band, not much bass, but the biggest issue is lack of volume. You will need to play on volume 11 to enjoy sound or go back to Massdrop for a headphone amplifier. Maybe that's their dastardly plan all along. I have a pair of Bauhn noise cancelling headphones that pack more punch than these cans and at a similar price point. Please don't even try to compare them with my Audio Technica ATH M50-X, but then they were a fraction of the price of those limited edition Gold beauties. Put it this way you won't go deaf wearing these comfy stylish Black and White Semi-Open Studio Headphones. Your ears are safe!

walter.m.williamsDo the ATH M50-X have a flatter response, or are they more for general listening? I have a set of AKGs that I use in the studio that are no longer made, and they are getting on 20 years. They perform so well that I can hear the start of samples when they aren't edited perfectly. I'm looking for a set that aren't so precise, but still are relatively flat. I went ahead with this drop as the price was really good, so it's a bit of a risk, but for 50, it was too hard to resist.
walter.m.williamsI've since tested the AKG M220's on my Yamaha stereo and you get decent volume through the more powerful amplifier and decent sound clarity too. Let's face it for 50 bucks these are still a bargain and they match the piano black of the Yammy finish. As semi-open though not ideal for doing voice overs in my recording booth, but fine for mixing in post.
