Was in NYC last June for a couple of KC Royals vs NY Mets games. The Harmon Kardon, AKG store was around the corner from my hotel. I spent 30 min auditioning the 812s vs my k7xx (712 annies if story true). I used my personal Fiio X5 gen 1 with Fiio E12 as source. I was BLOWN AWAY. The only difference I could tell between the 812s and K7xx was loudness at a given volume setting. The 812s had a much lower impedance. With the volume bumped up on the K7s I actually preferred their sound, though only marginally. Don't get me wrong the build on the 812s was worlds better than the k7s, but as for sound, neither hold up to my go to cans, a pair of HiFiMan HE 400, the old discontinued ones. Sound has at least as much to do with the listener as the equipment. I like a v shaped equalizer setting. Some people are offended by anything but flat. That's why they make equalizers. I walked out of that store with a huge grin on my face. I actually appreciated my K7xx (dare I say liked) for the first time since Massdrop delivered them to my door. Just food for thought.

FockerAmen to the HiFiMan build issue brother. And it's only gotten worse with the policy on no shipping of parts. But that being said with the right source and media they make me shiver and tear up a bit. Man, I need to get out more! lol

gm0n13I was so mad when my 400 died...to their credit, they did honor the warranty, but i chose to upgrade to the 400i...the build issues on the original 400 turned me off. The 400i is a slick headphone, but i regret the upgrade. My main headphones are the Audeze LCD-x, and while the orig 400 wasnt at that level, I enjoyed it almost as much as the X...thats saying a lot, cause the X is my perfect headphone. So I hope yours keep on hummin, cause thats a great pair of cans

gm0n13I would love a chance to hear the 812's but that's above my pay grade. I thought the 7XX were similar to The Anniversary 702's ? But I'm not sure.

MusicLoverI think you're right about that. The k7xx being closest to the 702 Annie. Too many model variations too few fully functional brain cells left. My bad. You're also right about the 812 price point. Maybe they're not above your pay grade just above your insanity threshold. But I got to admit, they looked REALLY COOL. LOL

gm0n13I would bite at a $499. But I don't think I'll see that anytime soon. I have most of AKG's line and my favorites are the 712's. I play them through several amps and so far my favorite combination is when I connect through The Darkvoice.

MusicLoverThe 712s are amazing when paired with a tube! I don't have the DarkVoice, but the LittleDot 1+ sounds pretty darn good with the 712s!

MusicLoverAnd you will probably never see these at $499. You might see them at $699, but that's probably about it.
