Aesthetically, the Onyx Series chair from AKRacing is about as sophisticated as it gets. Crafted with high-density mould-shaping foam with an optional upgrade to top grain leather front cover on the Deluxe Series model, the Onyx is comfy and accommodating to give you the best fit possible Read More
I came across this chair secondhand on facebook marketplace for $190. Within the first 20 minutes of use I encountered the same "tilt stuck all the way back" problem that others were experiencing here. Obviously, warranty repair would be a limited option for me - i have the original receipt, but not the original purchasing account.
Because of this, I disassembled the chair. All you need to do to fix the issue is re-seat the rock n' lock mechanism's gear. First, detach the chair from it's base (4 allen screws). Once you have the base by itself, you need to pop the plastic cover off of the top of the base - it's held in by plastic tabs at three points. This can be done with a vehicle trim removal tool, screwdriver, etc.
Once you have the cover off you will see the cause of the problem - their poorly designed pressed-sheet-metal gear actually moves in a way that it lets the lip it interfaces with dip below the gear itself. Once it's below the gear, the only way to fix it is to disassemble it.
In order to fix it, you have to compress the tilt mechanism so it's leaned all the way back. Be sure the tilt lever is in the "up" position. While you have the tilt mechanism compressed, use a pick or metal pry tool to hold the gear back on it's spring mechanism and release the base gently - it should return to the standard flat position.
I found this easiest to do while the steel cover (held in by 4 allen screws) was removed from inside the tilt mechanism - removing it may be an extra step, but necessary if you're trying to do it by yourself. This greatly reduces the force necessary to compress the tilt mechanism, but if you do it be sure to seat the two plastic bushing/spacer doohickeys properly on the tilt lever.
This was all from memory, with any request I will happily make my chair do the same thing again so I can take photos the next time i fix it. Any questions, i will do my best to answer. The best long term solution for me was tightening the tension on the tilt and being careful about leaning too far back.
Enjoyed this chair immensely until the frame broke. Got in August of 17. I’m 6’7”, 230 and loved the way it fit me. Mechanisms all work, but the frame under my right hip completely gave way. Now the back leans all the way back with any pressure at all. Is this potentially a warranty matter?
theonugFor the Onyx mechanism the handle on the left is to adjust the rock function twist the handle down to lock and up to unlock (the tension adjustment spring may need to be loosened as the chair is new)
AKRacingServiceThank you, it works fine now... that I put the base on correctly, I was only 180 degrees off, lol, yess, I am a dumbass every now and then!
I'm 6'4.5 250 lbs. This chair is AWESOME! Excellent packaging to insure the product is delivered without the 800lb shipping gorillas ruining your experience from the start. Very easy setup doable with a single person. The white gloves were a nice touch. Amazing build quality. The materials are really nice and well chosen. This chair is extremely comfortable which is the most important consideration. The ergonomics options are everything you need. The only possible negative, and this is minor, is the foam does have a slight outgas. It's not a black mark because that is the way the material is. Overall 5/5. Knocked it out of the park. The rating will hold so long as the foam holds up over time.
is it normal for the armrests to not "lock" in position and spin back and forth. I guess I was used to applying pressure to the armwrest. Seems like a strange design.
teehowardAre you referring to the armrest pad? They do not lock into place, they are adjusted with force but should stay in position. Reach out to Service@AKRacing.com if you have any further questions.
I got my chair but the lever to raise/lower the seat height had the end of the lever completely break off as soon as I applied any pressure - it's like it was barely attached. The chair is completely assembled but I can't raise or lower it and it's stuck on the lowest height.
Received the chair earlier today, love it but the right side arm rest came with a rip, really bummed about it. There's also a small dimple on the head rest, any way I could have the right side arm rest replaced?
teehowardI am sorry to hear of this, the divot should disappear within a week or so. If I can ask you to monitor the situation and reach out to Service@AKRacing.com if there is no change.
My order says it was shipped on February 16th, but there hasn't been any movement with the FedEx tracking number I was provided with. This is my first drop so I'm not sure how long the shipping usually takes. Anyone?
Howdy Everyone,
We are going to extend this drop another day. This will not delay the expected shipping date.
There are only 10 Onyx Chairs left at this time and hope to sell them out during this last day.
You will not see the Onyx at this price again for a really long time so take advantage of it while you can.
Cheers.
