I don't think I'd refer to G10 & D2 as "updated materials." Compared to the original, this is a disappointment.

cornerstonetomI could be wrong here, but I believe many people would agree that G10 is a better quality material than FRN (other than maybe people willing to sacrifice strength, feel and look for a bit less weight) I also believe most would see D2 as an improvement over 8cr13mov. It has much superior edge retention and decent toughness for a tool steel. And while D2 is not entirely stainless like the original I have never had much trouble taking care of it down here in Florida. I dont know if there were materials in these knives that may have been nicer in the past which you may be referring to but I do belive it's okay to list these as upgraded materials in this instance. They would not be upgrades on many knives sold on this site but they are in this particular instance better than the original options listed Al Mars website. At least for my needs.

Laxnerd213You're quoting "Made In China" specs. That's not what I'm talking about. The original SERE 2000 Al Mar folders were made in the USA with black Micarta scales and VG-10 blades. The fixed blade versions were black Micarta and CPM S30V. I own both versions that were made in the USA.

cornerstonetomAnd that's why I put the last paragraph in there as I didnt know if there were older versions of these knives with better specs. With that said how much did you pay for the USA made Al Mar with those materials? I'm guessing it was a great deal more than $79.99 but once again I could be wrong. I dont know a great deal about the brand (actually thought they were all made in japan due to the VG-10 and the fact japan doesnt really export their steel). I know these seem much cheaper than Al Mar's were a few years ago. Are any models still produced here? If so where might be the best place to find one? And how much would I be expected to pay? Thanks

Laxnerd213I did see that. I also saw what you wrote as your first sentence. I just wanted others to know what was going on. As to what I paid for something twenty years ago? I don't recall.

cornerstonetomWhat I wrote in my first sentence is a fact. A fact separate from any of this. G10 is > than FRN. Since I cant find any current version made with your materials entirely in the USA, I could argue that drop (and trust me I hate to do this) has every right to list this as the version with "upgraded materials". I do get where you are coming from in the fact that drop can be very misleading in their listings. And I do believe (like you) this is their intent sometimes. In that regard they could really improve and you have every right to criticize them.

Laxnerd213Two things, first, people who start of with, "I could be wrong..." don't think they are. You proved that to be the case. Second, while you may be right about comparing two different types of Chinese configurations, that had nothing to do with my discussion. In other words, what you said was totally irrelevant. Accurate but irrelevant. Pointless, actually. If you want to make what you say relevant, determine what is the context instead of missing the point. Go ahead, get in the last word. Know that I won't respond. I'm done with this discussion. Don't take my silence as agreement or acquiescence.

cornerstonetomOkay man. You are right. You win. I'm an idiot and should just keep my mouth shut. The main point in all of this is that Drop can be misleading. Which we seem to agree on but that point is mute. It is a complete waste of time and I dont even know why or what we are still arguing about.

cornerstonetomI did some research and every knife produced from Al Mar from 1979-2019 was done so in Seki City Japan. Not in the USA. They are only headquearted here. So were both wrong

cornerstonetomI sometimes start a comment with "I could be wrong..." when I'm too lazy to look things up. 😁

bookworm13Hahaha. Yeah that's probably what happened here. I was right in some respects in thinking these knives had always been made in Seki City, but it wasnt til after the conversation and pointless fight that I actually invested the time to look up info on the brand itself. I do know that 20 years ago (when he purchased this knife) you could build 90 percent of the knife in another country, assemble it here, and claim it was "made in the usa". That's not as easy to do today. There is a reason why microtech and ZT have strayed from m390 and elmax to usa produced crucible and carpenter steels (20cv and 204p). Nowadays it has to be assembled here with materials from here to claim its "USA Made" But in all honesty I'm still not sure what point he was trying to make. Maybe he does have the only one ever made here. I guess he won by being so mature and leaving the conversation entirely showing he no longer cares. Pretty stupid though. When I say I could be wrong I mean just that.

Laxnerd213What an ass. Your comments weren't in the least aggressive. His were. Some people have to assert some piece of pointless knowledge to feel good about themselves.

UsergradeDid I write that which Laxative Nerd213 is accusing me? Don't think so. But, "thank you" I guess? You're sounding a bit hostile. FWIW, I've not followed this thread now for over 6 months until you brought this to my attention. I'm not sure it's worth the bandwidth.
