If you're looking at this, you already have a keyboard that practically no one on earth has. However, you may or may not feel the need to add your own personal touch to the keyboard by putting a solid aluminum top plate on it Read More
I also received a full set of acrylic plates instead of aluminium top plates. I actually ended up using the top-most acrylic plates to improve the look of my ErgoDox, by leaving the protective paper on the under side of the topmost plate:

It looks pretty good. Bamboo-like, even. Perhaps not as nice as metal, but warmer to the touch, and an acceptable work-around until the aluminium top plates arrive. (-:
I got the acrylics instead of the aluminum too. I have already contacted support and if the past is any indication, Massdrop will take care of it without problem.
willrickettsWe have already shipped out half of the orders from the latest campaign as of late last week.
And we should be able to ship out the second half of the orders as soon as the rest of the aluminum top plates arrive our warehouse later this week.
nelsonif i received the wrong thing is there anything I should do beyond contacting massdrop support (already did that)? Instead of Aluminum top plates, I got a full acrylic enclosure!
I really do not under stand why an Al plates is necessary for such an ergo keyboard, only for a nice looking? Different from using a traditional keyboard (which feels no difference with metal cover), your wrist will be on the cold surface. This plate should at least goes with some foam wrist pads like Kinesis Advantage, but then it will be urgly like Kinesis...
Thanks for your detailed explain, Marfy. IMHO, people using ergo keyboards always consider wrist health as the first priority. I agree that a neat and sharp look is also very important. Btw, it is the most beautiful top plate for ErgoDox.
CharlestonI got aluminum top plates with both of my ErgoDox kits (one classic, one full-hand), purely for aesthetics. Although the clear top plates are cool and show off the blue PCB underneath, I feel that the aluminum top plates look more professional. (I can always show off by displaying the bottoms of the keyboards.) Hiding dust is a bonus.
As for ergonomics, I use gel wrist rests between my hands and the aluminum (full hand; for the classics I have custom wrist rests).
WARNING: Be sure to put a strip of electrical tape over your internal USB connectors when using aluminum top plates. Just put some tape over the internal USB cable connector and the USB socket on the Teensy board. Without such insulation, you run the risk of elestrostatic discharge (static electric shock), which can fry your Teensy board. It happened to me.
