BigGuyOnCampus89If you getting a laptop that doesn't have 3.5mm microphone jack / only audio combo jack then take it, if you really need.
Otherwise, don't.
BigGuyOnCampus89There are two different adapters. If you're talking about a Y 3.5mm adapter you'll need that for certain laptops or console gaming. The USB adapter is required for Mac and recommended for everyone who does NOT have a dedicated DAC or similar method of cleaning white noise. Plugging a 3.5mm mic directly into your motherboard may (not always, depends on the system) give increased white noise compared to using a USB.
We just got a great question this morning on Twitter why we don't just include the USB by default. The answer is not everyone needs it. Some systems work fine with just the 3.5mm jack, some people already have DACs or USB adapters. We don't want to charge people more for stuff they don't need.
AntlionJoeThanks!
AntlionJoeYeah, I just ordered the ModMic 5 from Antlion's website, and I cjosr not to get the USB adapter. I have a SoundBlaster E5 USB DAC/headphone amp, which is basically a higher quality smd more feature rich version of the USB adapter. I could only assume that Antlion's USB adapter wouldn't be capable of driving my Sennheiser HD 650 headphones (300 ohm impedence compared to your average headphones' 16~32 ohms).
I did get their Y-adapter, though. I could see myself maybe wanting to use the pair with my phone (which has a built in headphone amp that can actually drive these headphones just well enough to sound amazing).
Being able to pick just the parts you want/need is awesome.
