If you want a microphone, just buy a desk top mic or a pair of gaming headphones. The sound quality is better than any mid mic Ive used and with 7.1 gaming headphones, you can hear where everyone is around you. If your a gamer, then 7.1 headphones with a mic is you best option and if your a youtube or doing voiceovers , a desktop mic is the best option. I found used blue yeti black out mics on ebay for just $40 and Strix 7.1 gaming headphones on ebay for just $45. If your willing to fork out the extra 10-15 dollars, there are much better options if your willing to buy used.

jnlong1To be fair, a mic on your desk or on a boom arm occupies more space overall. Stuff like the ModMic or V-Moda BoomPro are compact solutions for people are willing to make a compromise between size and sound quality, or simply prefer having a headset experience with decent headphones they already own. With that said, the sound quality still is fine in regards to communicating in games for the listener in my opinion. I don't hear anything that would irritate me. Your mileage may vary though, I suppose.
No comment on the headphones part of your post. :>
