Sigh, this checks a lot of boxes for what I'm looking for but not sure about the cooling/sound... heard this thing turns into a mini-jet when under load. Don't really care for a 4K display running on a 1070 but can work around that.
other than the warranty issues, what's been you experience? Is the cooling still function with the lid closed and using an external display/keyboard?
You picked one thing I was worried about that turned out okay. The model I have has two 965m in SLI and it managed to keep them reasonably cool when the laptop was closed on my desk connected to an external display/mouse/keyboard. In fact, I had to use it that way most of the time, due to an issue running the laptop on battery power.
Most of my issues, aside from poor screen/trackpad fitment, stem from incredibly poor firmware/software support from gigabyte. Beginning with massively outdated Nvidia driver support (using the latest caused blue-screens/crashing on battery) all the way to them revoking support for windows 10 for my model, just because they refuse to fix a supposed driver compatibility issue..
Then when I first tried asking for warranty service they "couldn't find my warranty registration".... That was the beginning of the end of my Gigabyte patronage.
Oh, and sound was moderate, not the loudest I've heard nor the quietest. Wish I could give an objective measurement, but I don't really have a good one. I can say the microsoft surface 3 I had before the x5 would sometimes produce a much more annoying (higher pitched) fan noise.
Cool, thanks. Sorry to hear about your issues with Gigabyte. I may end up waiting and checking out the MD version when it is finally available... uses the Max-Q version of the 1080 but been debating on this and the MSI Stealth
