There are a number of drop-in substitutes for the 6J1: Voshkod 6ZH1P-EV, M8100/CV4010, GE JAN5654W, EF95, 6AK5, Western Electric 403B, CV850. Opinions I've found on the internet indicate the first 3 in the list are the best sounding ones which surprises me because WE almost always seems to be among the best. The GE tubes are the best bang for the buck followed by the 6ZH1P-EV if you're looking for the first three.
For the output tube, the default substitution is the 6P1P-EV. The -EV version is a ruggedized version of the standard 6P1P and supposedly sounds better as well as lasts longer (5000 hrs vs 2000 hrs) than the plain version.
All the Russian tubes can be found on ebay at very reasonable prices, but you may have to wait 2-3 weeks to receive them.
I can explicitly comment on the GE JAN5654 & Sovtek 6P1P-EV tubes. It opened up the little amp in both depth & breadth compared to the stock tubes. Took them about 40-50 hours to fully break in.
Using the mini in my office to drive a pair of Frugal Horns. It won't peel the paint off the walls, but it's *very* nice for good jazz & classical
6P1P-EVs didn't leave me very impressed. RCA 6AQ5s with socket adapters sound sweet and the amp runs cooler with them.
