So I posted this on the (CEntrance DACport Slim) drop, but I will ask once more.
Why would you spend $100 on the slim DAC instead of $100 on this tube amp?
I'm curious does anybody own the DACport Slim and if so would you recommend it instead of this desktop style amp? Please fill me in, I've never owned an amp but would like to try one for my AKG K553's I got from massdrop.
ZachLThis is a barebones Class A SET tube amp. A DAC concerts a digital signal to a line level audio output, which can then be sent to an amplifier for amplification. Sometimes you find amps with built in DACs. Class A SETs have a distinctive sound(even amongst tube amps) so this is a pretty good deal.
ZachLThis is a speaker amp, by the way, so you can't really connect it to headphones. Probably something you should know if you're looking for a headphone amp.
demizeYeah I noticed it only has RCA that's pretty cool I have audioengine A5+'s from 5 or 6 years ago paired to a 15" sub.
I know audioengine has a DAC the D1. You have to replace the tubes for this amp eventually right??
ZachLI don't own this amp, but I do own a Little Dot I+ (which I highly recommend as a headphone amp, although you may want a $10 ground loop isolator to go with it). I've been using it for... 5 years, at least? and I've never had to replace the tubes. Just don't break them!
ZachLThe tubes are thankfully easy to replace. You can get a lifetime supply of 6p1p-evs for about 20 bucks, and the 6j1s can be cheaply replaced with GE Jan5654s. You can technically used this as a headphone amp. All you need is to do is get four cables, attach one end of each to banana plugs, and solder the other end to a headphone jack. I did a rough test of this and the sound was out of this world 3d. I plan on making a rugged little box to better configure a headphone "tap" with a built in pot in the future.
