Got mine yesterday but it must be a lemon.
The sound was extremely thin and had absolutely NO dimensionality (as if it was mono). Then - all of a sudden - the volume went up to max and turning the pot all the way down would not change anything! The tubes smelled like burnt so I turn it off immediately.
Overall, it looks like a refurbished or B-stock unit. I've own a 2x tube APPJ in the past and build quality was much better.
The 6J1 tubes look like they've been store in a very dusty warehouse and smell weird.
Sorry to hear that. Mine looked new, so far no issues to report. The only disappointment so far is that 6P1s aren't easy to roll, a 9 to 7 pin adapter is required and even then it may not work.
Did you reach out to Massdrop concerning your amp?
If so, what response did you receive from them?
I picked up 2, one for me and one for a friend.
Both are faulty out of the box.
I used to sell HiFi gear just a few years ago (Naim, McIntosh, Classé, Musical Fidelity, etc for electronics, plus speakers such as B&W, Sonus Faber, etc) so I certainly know my way around the correct setup of an audio system.
Similarly to what you described, the volume pots are not functioning correctly on both units. And I do not want to start any fires, knowing that once the blue smoke starts coming out of electronics like these, it is notoriously difficult to get it back in.
I'm disappointed, as this purchase for me and my friend was done based on my curiosity, and recommendation...
Thank you for any feedback you can provide.
I contacted Massdrop's customer service. They arranged a replacement right away. They pay for shipping the faulty unit back and shipped the new unit before I returned the old one.
However, they don't stock any item, so they had to first source a replacement unit from APPJ, which took some time.
The replacement unit is due to arrive this Wednesday.
Wow, thanks for a superspeedy reply!
That's good news. Your replacement likely came in the same shipment as mine; let's hope yours is good this time.
We sent an inquiry to MD the same day as picking them up and testing, so hopefully we get a similarly thoughtful response.
Cheers, and best of the season to you.
