Every watchmaker I've listened to says NOT to use a watch winder unless you have a vary complicated watch, e.g. perpetual calendar, moonphase, and the like.

Nickyro23Modern oils in a watch are capable for going long periods of time without use and will not degrade the movement. Master watchmakers (On Time (Manuel Yazijian, episode called The Truth about Watch Winder), Watch and Listen (Cameron Weiss, episode called Carl ruins Everything), Unwound (Seth Roberts), Watchbox on Youtube (Mike Michaels)) talk about winders and all say they are unnecessary.

greyfox422I didn't watch the videos you referenced, but there's a big difference between saying they are unnecessary and saying they are bad. I'm not sure anyone thinks a modern watch needs to be wound at all times, but rotate between three or more automatics and you'll see why it's necessary for the end user. At that point, you can either wear it as a fashion piece and pull out your phone when someone asks the time or reset the watch everytime, which itself adds wear to the crown (esp if it's a screw-down).

Chenson722True but if you’re wearing a 4 watch rotation with some modern watches having 60 or 70 hour power reserve even 42 you shouldn’t have to touch the crown that often i think the best thing you can do for a watch not worn too often it’s a good practice to wind once a month that’s better than constantly wearing while not wearing your watches on a winder

ED61I hear what you're saying, but that's the benefit of a quality watch winder. This one has a remote and a bar on the unit where you can decide how many turns per day each individual watch gets, if any, so you could certainly set up such a system where you rotate just one watch a day. In fact, I might do just that now that you mention it. My "problem" is that I have 2 solar watches and 5 automatics. Even if I wore a set one for every day of the week (which would be unnecessarily constricting), none of my autos will last a week between wears. It's both tricky to remember and time consuming to wind the ones that aren't in use. I'm not saying the winder is for everyone, but it does serve a function without doing damage and, used properly, can be a very helpful tool that also displays your watches. Granted, watches are by definition unnecessary today, even for divers and pilots, so you could argue that this is, by extension, grossly wasteful.

Chenson722I see your point that’s the beauty of the world of watch collecting there’s no real right or wrong just don’t drop them or swim with an open crown other then that it’s whatever makes you happy you’re watches your money good luck enjoy your watches PS grossly wasteful? In my world more than Necessary and I don’t even care about the time

greyfox422I haven't seen that advice posted on a major watchmaker's site in a long time. In fact, Omega actually documents exactly how you should set your winder for their watches: https://www.omegawatches.com/fileadmin/Customer_Service/calleo/faq/FAQ-watch_winder_EN.pdf

PandaSPURI own an Oemga Planet Ocean and the crown tube is the most delicate component on these watches (quick google will agree). Less wear on the tube means fewer services that save me $650 a pop! The winder will pay for itself in my crown tube alone!

cspatterYea thats what I hate most about divers, having to unscrew the crown to wind them. I don't mind winding my speedy nearly as much since the crown isnt screwed in and stays flush to the case as i wind it.
