How is the surface of the desk without the mouse pad? I like to have my dinners at my desk when I'm not going out with friends and I'd rather have a clean desk without the full on mouse pad.

JordanFairIt's got a black laminate over it, it'll be fine for when you eat at your desk but since the tabletop is in three pieces the lines in the desk might get annoying. Also I eat over the mousepad really easy to clean it up with a damp towel
