Styled like a balisong knife, the Artisan Cutlery Kinetic Tool is as fun to play with as it is handy on the job. Built with a copper handle, it opens and closes just like a butterfly knife—only when you open this one, you won’t find a blade, but rather a 3.9-inch multi-tool Read More

Copper is too soft of a material to take repeated impacts of flipping. The tolerance of the lock degraded with a day because the copper indented when closing. If you drop this, it also might further loosen the tolerances. Other than that, it’s a hefty tool, and I’ve still had some fun using this as a pry bar, bottle opener, and screwdriver. The spring loaded action is reasonably interesting too.
It is pretty large, so not really going to be an everyday type tool, but could be handy in a pinch.
Something, that I think people may not realize is that the "blade" flips out in addition to the balisong handles flipping around. So if the latch is on the wrong side, flip the blade around.
More solid than expected, ultimately not terribly useful.
This is a desktop tool, not an EDC--no way to attach a clip, and even if there was, the length and weight make this tool a big ask for daily use. As a fun toy its weight makes normal flipping more painful than I'd prefer.
I will say that once opened and latched there's far less play than I expected; it makes a better pry lever than I would have guessed, although I don't know how long that rigidity will last. But since I won't be using it much I'll probably never know.
TL;DR: Heavy novelty not suitable for EDC, but solid for the price.
All this will do is teach you how to slice your fingers off the first time you use a real "kinetic tool". The product photos show two different units, one where the latch is on the correct side and one where the latch is on the wrong side.
On the one I received, the latch is on the safe handle, but should be on the bite handle like every other "tool" of this variety. This is not an insignificant detail or a matter of personal preference; when you use it like this the bottle opener slams into your knuckles if you use the handle without the latch, and if you use the handle with the latch you have the latch flipping around getting in your way. The way it is supposed to be is the latch on the bite handle out of you way while your fingers/knuckles are nice and safe grasping the safe handle. I'm not sure if this was overlooked in the design, or just somebody not paying attention while they were assembling this particular unit, either way pretty dang disappointing from a company with "artisan" in its name.
Aside from the above glaring issue, it's a bit heavy but all right. I'm hoping that it smooths out a bit when it is broken in.
I read reviews saying this was heavy, and it is. It's not as comfortable to learn on as a true learner balisong. I used the bottle opener once, and from that experience, this is a novelty item, not an EDC pick.
