Excellent!
two things I like most. Coffee stays hot. I heat the reservoir before pouring over the coffee and the coffee stays hot till finish. Easy to cap it off for a little later or take on the go.

I have the black carafe with handle. I've been using it for some time now. It's one of my most used coffee makers. The insulated carafe keeps the coffee hot and fresh for a surprisingly long time.

Standing the test of time
I've been using this set up for about a year now. My only complaint is that you cannot see how much space is left in the carafe and if you over fill it can really make a mess. To avoid this I purchased a digital scale so I can know exactly how many oz. are already in the base. Overall it has been a great unit, and the reusable coffee filter means less trash!

Looks good but could be better
I got the copper version without the handle.
  1. Unboxing was great - it comes in a cylinder box; very nicely packed with foam protecting the glass, etc.
  2. Looks great - the copper was gleaming and no scratches or blemishes. But the overall weight is lighter than expected. With that kind of double wall construction, I seem to expect a bit more heft in the hand - translates to feeling "higher class". But I guess when it's full of coffee, lighter is probably better
  3. Size (32oz) is actually bigger than I expected. Without the handle, it makes for a difficult to handle base. I don't use the screw on cover as it's totally unmanageable - worried I'll drop it. I keep the glass filter holder on, and use that as the handle. But it does get hot.
  4. Most important - how does it make coffee :-) I compared it to my Hario V60 using a paper filter - using the same beans, same grinder, same weight of coffee (48g) and same amount of water (750ml). Interestingly, the Hario came out pretty well perfect (since that's what my specs are tuned for). But for the Asobu, it's a little underextracted. Probably due to the metal filter. I tried again (following day - can't drink too much coffee at a time) but with hotter water (97C) and it seemed better.
  5. Another comparison was to a single size (7oz?) pourover also with a metal filter. Beans and water adjusted accordingly. Also at 97C. Not sure why, but the small pourover had a lot more body, and the flavours blended better. I still felt the Asobu seemed underextracted. More experiments next weekend... e.g., using the Asobu with a paper filter, etc.
  6. But overall, the take away is that when I'm making coffee for myself, I'll use the small single cup pourover. For a group, even though it's not a thermal base, I would stick with my v60 with paper filter.
  7. I probably wouldn't buy it again. Difficult to hold, carry and pour is my main problem.

munkewI was wondering if you were able to do additional testing (mentioned in #5). Just wondering how the unit performed with paper filters and the same beans as the hario. Mostly just wondering if the material (SS vs Glass) makes a difference for the few minutes it's in there. Considering this 'carafe' for coffee but would likely utilize the KONE filter (will this fit?) I'm currently using with a Chemex. It would be nice to not have to worry so much about it falling off the counter or someone breaking it in the dishrack or something (we've lost 1 Chemex (RIP) and this one has had a few close calls). Typically only making about 400 mL, so the size seems fine...I guess I'm just wondering about the vessel overall vs. a Chemex. Let me (us) know if you get a chance!

Warlock983Hi Warlock, I started experimenting with grinds rather than using the paper filter. Figured if I was going to do that, I’ll just stick to the Hario. The SS filter lets me reduce one piece of paper; the grounds go into my wife’s soil mix. Also I was hoping that SS will let more of the oils through than paper. I varied the grind (mostly smaller) and also increased the time for pre-infusion to 45 secs. Kept temperature the same at 97C. Since I was experimenting, I brought the coffee down to 24g, and 300g of water, with about 25g left in the filter when I remove it. So final cup of about 250-275ml. Less coffee so pouring pattern is different - more towards the edges but with a smaller spout. Long story short, yes, can make it taste better - not unextracted, but then I used exactly the same specs with the hario and the V60 seems to taste better! :-) So the Asobu is sitting there looking pretty, but not getting much use.

The stainless steel filter is great, it does a good job of filtering out sludge without being slow and it's easy to clean so far. The glass pourover funnel is great, being all glass with no tight crevices makes it easy to clean. The insulated steel carafe is great, it keeps the coffee hot, has a nice 1 liter capacity, and is easy to clean. The rubber sleeve that connects the funnel to the carafe generally won't come into contact with the liquid or ground coffee, so the fact that it can absorb flavors and be difficult to clean hopefully won't be a problem. We'll see. The insulated cap for the carafe seems like it'll do a good job when you want to transport a pot of coffee without spilling or getting cold, but I haven't tried it yet. I'm disappointed that it has plastic parts that would come into contact with the hot liquid coffee, which is a no-go in my book but I'll probably try using it at some point. My only real complaint is the handled pour cap, which screws onto the carafe in place of the funnel or insulated cap. This is the part you actually use when you're pouring finished coffee into your cup to drink. The handle and pour spout are useful, but the whole thing is made of plastic which will absorb coffee flavors, to be released later as stale coffee flavors along with plastic flavors. It also has tight grooves and crevices which make it more difficult to clean. The solution is to rinse it immediately after use to keep it clean, or simply don't use the handle/spout attachment. It's not a problem to grip the carafe itself (the outside doesn't get hot) and pour without the spout (the stainless steel carafe lip doesn't dribble). The handle/spout attachment does have a screw-down closure, but it doesn't appear to be insulated or leak-proof so it's not really useful for insulating nor preventing spills. If this one piece were redesigned to be all glass and/or steel, without the crevices for dried coffee to collect, I'd be delighted. Aside from that, a very minor complaint is that when you wash the whole set, the parts don't stack in any tidy way for drying. You can assemble it, in which case it won't drip dry, or you can take up a bunch of space on your counter or drying rack where all the bits sit upside down until dry. The design is great, but it's not brilliant. A brilliant design would be one where the pieces fit together a 2nd way that allows everything to drip dry.
