sanibuyEnables Dolby surround sound. It's a sound processor that generates virtual surround. Ever seen a headset marketed as being capable of 5.1/7.1 sound? They usually need one of these.

sanibuyMore for the fact that if you're gaming on console you can use one of your actually good headphones for it instead. Gaming headsets suck, no matter the brand. But since no good headphones work out the box with consoles that well the MixAmp functions great to let you use them.

KailecThat's not true. Sennheiser PC360/G4ME ZERO and Beyerdynamic MMX 300. Overpriced, yes, but they don't suck. PC360 seems to have gotten discontinued but it used to be sold for less than $200 and it was a fantastic deal since it used the same drivers as the HD 598.

DragonzeanseIn the case of the Sennheiser 360 you're just paying for the mic attached to it. Overpriced sucks too. :P

KailecIf that's what you were arguing, you should have said something to begin with.
PC360 was a better deal when it was ~$200 because it was basically the price of HD 598s plus a microphone. Because the price of a ModMic and HD 598 is /such/ a bargain by comparison.
There is nothing inherently wrong with headsets, even expensive ones. Are a lot of them a poor value? Yes. Are /all/ of them a poor value? That depends on the person. Which is why to say they all suck is, ironically, wrong.
Astro A40 is overpriced ****, though.
