Folks, neither Massdrop or JC Sportsline have done anything wrong. These are two different products from two different sources. They didn't conspire to charge more for this grille, and they didn't know that ECS had another replica grille coming out immediately after the group buy closed.
I'm surprised by the reactions here. It's a $150 difference on a grille for a $40-60k+ A4 or S4.

dropshadowI agree that we need to keep things in perspective. On the other hand, the whole point of Massdrop I thought was to buy in volume and pay less than you would if you dealt directly with a vendor. That's the exact opposite of what happened here. So, unfortunately, this experience has undermined my faith in the concept and economic principles of Massdrop, even though it was only a $150 difference.

FrcottingLook at it this way: Two weeks ago there were no B8.5 RS4-style grilles on the market. One popped up at $409 plus $85 shipping. Massdrop worked with JC Sportsline to get the price down to $320 + $80 shipping, an instant savings of $94. Had we gotten more people involved with the group buy, we would have saved even more. Shortly before the group buy ended, ECS announced that they would be coming out with an RS4-style grille for the B8.5 facelift cars as well. All of the sudden there were two options where two weeks ago there were none.
Based on the popularity of the B8 pre-facelift version of the JC Sportsline grille (the group buys for those sold over 200 grilles), it was only a matter of time before there was one for the facelift cars, and it just happened that two came out at roughly the same time. One considerably less than this one.
Why weren't there more buyers to bring the price down further? My guess is that because the B8.5 cars are so new, there aren't as many on the used market yet, so they're still in the hands of their first owners who are less likely to modify them. Enthusiasts, on the other hand, are more likely to scoop them up on the used market and start customizing right away. We're just the first wave of B8.5 customers looking for grille options. Once leases end and cars get traded, there will be more people looking to do the same thing. Had this group buy happened a year from now, I'd bet that there would have been twice as many participants in this group buy. But, in a year from now, there will be so many of these grilles on these cars that it won't matter where you bought it from. Look at the B8 forums for an idea of just how popular those grilles have become.
Either way, what's done is done. I understand the frustration and share some of it, but like I said below, based on what I've seen in photos of the ECS grille, I'd still buy the JC Sportsline grille over that one, but that's me. I had the B8 version and on a previous car and was very happy with it. You get what you pay for. Time will tell which is the better grille, or if there's even an appreciable difference at all.
