i've been really wanting a pair of good closed-back headphones that aren't upwards of $800 to wear when my girlfriend is asleep and can't wear my open-backs... Is this as good as it is going to get? (i'm looking at the a1000zs). Hate the non-removable cable but love the price.

3xplosiv0I have experienced closed back AT models, not these exact ones but I really enjoyed my listening time with them. Hopefully a owner of these can provide us more feedback. Check the reviews this seems pretty dang good to put it lightly.

Alan_GI'm so tempted but my only reservation is that I kinda want closed backs to listen to metal and from what I can tell, the reviews seem to say the bass is good and clear but not powerful and punchy.

3xplosiv0A1000Z I think have adequate bass as far as "classic metal" goes... probably not so adequate for EDM but I don't listen much to EDM so I can't judge... BUT there are 3 things you must know: 1) You can EQ them - good quality headphones respond well to EQ 2) Your brain adjusts very fast to the sound signature of the headphones... so if you listen for some time you'll adapt to their bass as well and it will sound natural to you... but what our brain apparently can't do is to add/amend missing/distorted sound details - so with some headphones in the same recording (the same source/DAC/amplifier) you will be able to hear things that you won't be hearing with others... the same also applies to some more ethereal and hard to describe things like "sound stage" and "imaging". 3) Truth is that for $250 you can't really tick all the boxes that, say, $1200 or $2500 (Super Flagship) headphones can. P.S. that was a response to Alan_G not to 3xplosiv0

hinotori2772I know the response wasn't directly to me, but regardless thanks for the info. I love my open backs for most listening (very modded Monolith M1060s) but the only time I feel disappointed is when i want to listen to metal or something that needs a lot more punch in the bass. I'm thinking I might go for the Beyer DT 770s instead of these, what do you think?

3xplosiv0Well, I haven't tried neither Monolith nor Beyerdynamic models you mention (let alone modded Monolith) BUT a few point to consider here: 1) DT770 is a studio monitor, i.e., would aim for flat response so probably won't be fun for metal, as well. 2) DT770 is a lower tier headphone (relatively cheap studio monitor) whereas M1060 is Audiophile grade (I think) so you'd essentially be downgrading... and probably won't going to like it... at least not initially. 3) Planar drivers are known to respond very well to EQ and are also famous for their "planar bass" so have you tried to adjust the frequency response of your source a bit - raise some frequency bands that your style of metal favors? You know that this is what Audeze basically does with its portable/in-ear planars - applies heavy EQ through a DSP located in the iPhone cable or the Bluetooh module used to connect the earpieces.
