Why get this when you have Drop THX 789 amplifier at the same price ?

Personally I think this amp certainly *looks* a lot better than the 789. Whether it sounds better or worse is another story.

I haven't seen the sound quality numbers / Audio Precision charts on this amp, but it has to be very special to run at the same price point at the THX 789 and 887 amps. What's super cool though is the ability to run two separate left/right 3 pin XLR cables to your cans. I've seen these kinds of custom cables, and I always though that's the major league of headphone cable terminations, so this amp would be your opportunity to apply the concept. It should also mean that the signal is clean AF.

And $110 more than the SP200/THX-888, this thing seems to be in a very weird position price-wise. I'd love to see the measurements out of it.

I have this and been using this for some time. Its absolutely an incredible amp and a beast in size and heft. Its very much comparable to 789, which was what I was using before. Let me start by saying, there is something special about this amp. It's background is as dark as it gets, would be similar to 789. However, I like the sound of this amp more than 789. Everything just sounds sweeter, and more enjoyable. I started to understand difference between sweet sounding v/s clinical. I strongly feel, this is a step up from 789 from musicality, and well justified at $400. As with any high end amp, you need really high end DAC. Currently I am using it with D50, but planning to get D70 or M500 to really get most out of this and 789.

Would you also recommend this for its SE output? For cans that don't have an option to interchange the cables? From what I've gathered the SE output of the 789 was highly praised.

SE is equally good. With balanced you essentially get more power, double to be precise. These can easily give 789 run for money. I stopped using 789 after I listened to these.

This was like $300 in warehouse, I'd give that for it but $400 is 789 territory.

The output levels mentioned in the spec are incorrect. The correct ones are: SE: 112mW @300Ω, 1050mW @32Ω Balanced: 450mW @300Ω, 3400mW @32Ω As this is a solid state (as opposed to an ETL tube amp) the higher the impedance the lower the power.

Agree with you on SE & Balanced specs, as usual, every now & then, Drop gets info wrong (in this case, back to front) which is confusing for those who either don't know or research which is the majority... Still, this is a tempting option...budget permitting... Hope you have a great day !

This is the result of PALOOKAS typing on a keyboard and making mistakes in an amateur PALOOKA office. Can't they even get another pair of eyes / editor / buddy / quality controller / zombie to proof read a product page before publishing it??????? I want to be a fan of this site and buy the products, but how can do that with such significant ERRORS @Drop ??????
