Well I found my problem with gain, it was the volume setting of my PC sound card. I moved the PC sound card volume to max (little speaker icon in tray) and my Sennheiser HD580's are spectacular, actually had to set the dip switches back to the mid 10db setting. Now the Aune T1 outperforms the Fiio E17 not just in volume but in detail, soundstage etc. The Aune T1 is truly amazing.
Interesting that the PC volume setting affected the USB output on the Aune T1, because it has no effect when my Fiio E17 is plugged into the USB port??
