I was skeptical about how much of a difference I would actually hear since the X1S is my first real DAC/Amp other than my computers on board audio and LG V20. I use the MEE Audio PX to listen to my music. They make an obvious improvement from my old non HIFI earphones but this thing has really unlocked their potential.
First the X1S has some serious power I barley have it on and its loud enough. I'm confident I could destroy my IEMs if I turned this on on high volume so be careful. I can hear each instrument more clearly; they stand out from each other. I can hear some parts of songs that I barley noticed before and there are even some sounds present that I could never previously hear. Even the sound that I always noticed easily before is just on a different level Its so much fuller and clearer. There is simply more of everything that you want to hear.
Im very glad that I purchased this DAC/Amp its incredible! I promise you wont be sorry if you buy this .
Feel free to ask questions.
Uuuuuuuh many options, haha! The IEM market has EXPLODED with variety. I recommend poking around Head-Fi.org or looking for a blog that does IEM reviews. NuForce makes higher end IEMs (EDC3) if you like your EDC and you just want something more refined, my Etymotics have had AMAZING detail and linearity (they just had a drop here), Audio Technica makes good stuff with good reviews (though personally I have only tried their over-ear headphones), Periodic Audio, 1More, I quite like the Sennheiser HD1 In Ears and wireless IEMs (I think their branding had to change from Momentum, HD1 is their new name for the Momentum line, their neckband one is called the HD1 IE BT, IE for In Ear, BT for Bluetooth), just to name a few.
I have an HD1 in-ear bluetooth, which is interesting on several levels. It’s still got a warm sound, but it’s less boomy/blurred than the EDC, a more articulate sound but still a fair dose of fun. Being Bluetooth, it also comes with it‘s own built-in DAC and amp (Bluetooth is digital, DAC = Digital to Analog Converter, and then an Amp is needed to amplify the Analog signal before it reaches the drivers). It’s Bluetooth is actually a touch more advanced than the Momentum 2 Over Ear (now called the HD1, also), because it natively supports AAC audio without re-encoding it for transmission, which means stuff you might have bought from iTunes or stream from Apple Music will playback natively without quality loss, almost like you still have a wired connection. Nice for me and my iPhone 8+, haha (No headphone jack, sad face) Finally, the neckband is wrapped in comfy black leather with red stitching, and the neckband vibrates if your phone gets a notification and the earpieces not in your ears. Sennheiser also makes a cheaper version in black and blue without the leather or vibration, called the CX 7.00 BT. There’s also the ones without the neckband and just a behind the neck wire, called HD1 Free and CX 6.00 BT respectively.
Long description of the wireless In Ear that can’t be used with the Aune, on a drop for the Aune, I know... but maybe it’ll give you something to think about in general. When I think of In Ears, I think about using them straight out of a nice phone (like an older iPhone or LG), Bluetooth, or for maximum quality connected to a DAP (like an iPod, FiiO, Astell & Kern, etc), not so much with a desktop DAC/Amp. Desktop DAC/Amps ARE GREAT, but usually for less sensitive or harder to drive headphones like the HD 6XX or HE-4XX, but a Desktop DAC/Amp used with In Ears are so much more sensitive that you might hear a background hiss that you wouldn’t hear with less sensitive headphones.

I own both and for $380 total it's an outstanding value and great looking stack.
I use the X7S with my 4xx (SE) and 6xx (Balanced) and love it. The sound from the amp is full, wide and punchy. The headphones sound good when driven by the X1S, but compared to the X7S the sound is a little thin. The X7S has the power to drive any headphone I'll likely ever own.
The X1S is a great DAC and good Amp. It has a nice selection of input options and sends a clear signal to my powered speakers or X7S. The X1S has enough power to comfortably drive the 6xx and 4xx and is a solid DAC/Amp combo that would be a great standalone addition to any desktop and I have no issues recommending it. I liked the X1S so much I decided to give the X7S a try.
I purchased the X1S before I got the X7S and could have saved a few bucks if I bought them at the same time. While the X1S is no slouch the X7S is a superior amp that offers SE and Balanced output at a very competitive price. If I had to choose 1 of these devices I would opt for the X7S and pair it with a cheaper stand alone DAC like an OL DAC or Topping D10 or D30. This would get you a sweet setup for $250-$300, but it wouldn't look as pretty as the X1S/X7S stack.

I'm not sure. I think it has something to do with roll off. I have played around with the different modes and of I try really hard I think I can hear a difference, but I'm not sure. I leave it in the default setting.

Using MacBook no need to install drivers. I think my Aune X1S has a technical problem since I hear noise in my music all the time (X1S > X7S > Audeze El8) It's something definitely related to the DAC since the whole setup works perfect when I use Line in on X1S.
X7S on the other side is a good amp with a lot of power. I own Oppo HA-2 and comparing it to X1S I feel the difference is very subtle only X7S has more power to drive my headphones.
Reminder that Aune doesn't offer any warranty on their products, which is a surprise for me. Massdrop offered me a refund.
UPDATE!
I figured where is the noise coming from, I am using both my Audeze EL-8 and HD-6XX at the moment. It's MIDI Setup on Macbook. The sampling is limited to 192,000 Hz when I increase it to the highest 384,000 Hz (as mentioned for USB) I hear the noise. I am not sure if this is affecting the sound quality, but I can't notice any difference.

I rated both of Aune DAC and AMP to 4 stars instead of 5. I am happy I didn't return it.

*A WARNING TO WINDOWS USERS* Go to the speaker setting and check 'disable all enhancements' box in the enhancement tab. Checking 'disable all enhancements' is different from not using enhancements. If you don't, Windows will fucks up the sound. I just figured this out and I'm furious that I haven't been using the full potential of this device. Update: The only thing slightly disappointing part of X1s is the lack of gain switch. If you want to drive an efficient headphone or IEM, you will find adjusting volume is quite annoying. Though it's not a big deal for me because I use HD 6XX. For me, the volume nob usually stays at 10-12 a'clock position. Aside from that, I'm really happy with X1s. I'm not a person who has a diverse experience with many devices, so it's hard to judge how good this dac/amp is but I'm pretty confident X1s sounds better than my previous device, Topping MX3. Also, I recommend the silver chassis. It looks amazing. Overall, I highly recommend this for people who want a great all-in-one solution.

Well, it works and looks nice.
Though honestly, I don't hear any difference compared with my humble laptop audio jack, I'm testing with HD600, HD6XX and HD58X and no, it doesn't do any magic, specially for the HD6XX which is the headphone I was disappointed with. The HD58X still it's the king of fun, HD600 humble but enjoyable and HD6XX still super dark and MEH. And I don't perceive extra detail or something, it seems to be the same. And YES, I'm listening to FLAC's, with Foobar with no WASAPI.
Snake oil? I don't know, I'll give it a lot of use and maybe I'll edit this review later, but overall I'm not impressed, at least it looks good in my desk.
Anyway, like I said before, it works, it produces sound, setup it's really easy. It has a lot of power, at my normal listening volume, I only use up to 9 o'clock at most (or 1/4 of the whole scale). I have a few minor complains though, that's why I only giving it 4 stars: First, the caps that came on my unit are transparent, I was expecting the red ones like in the pictures, I know they're in the back, but still. Second and most importantly, the USB with the driver and manual came DOA, fortunately you can download them from the web but you should have to have the whole package ready to use at once, actually the "USB" it's like half USB, maybe some chip is inside of it but the circuit board it's exposed, the main USB contacts have clear signs of heavy use, and probably they're not doing effective contact and that's why it doesn't work. COME ON Aune, You couldn't include a pristine USB in your $ 200 DAC/Amp?
EDIT: It's plug and play in Linux.

Fenriz"I don't hear any difference compared with my humble laptop audio jack" Same for me, even if there's a small difference it's negligible with 6XX.
" the USB with the driver and manual came DOA" Same for me, I bought mine X1s from a different source and it just doesn't work.
" It's plug and play in Linux " It's the same on Windows 10.

I can only compare against my semi-portable Fiio/Bravo stack (X3,mk3 + Q1,mk2/Bravo Ocean) but the X1S/X7S combo seems to handle the two things that my other gear couldn't: unbroken streaming, and proper driving of my HiFiMan he560(v3). Unbroken Streaming: X1S simply works While streaming Tidal master quality audio over USB to my Q1 as DAC, the Q1 would occasionally skip. It just couldn't keep up with sustained high bit-rates, despite tweaking everything I could software-wise to coax a stable configuration into existence. The X3 as DAC was found to suffer an unreliable connection. Despite remaining skip-free, my unit has issues with recovering function after the connected PC drops into and wakes from a sleep cycle (likely a firmware weakness). My unit would get stuck in the powered-on state, unresponsive, scaring me that it had been bricked somehow, and occasionally corrupting my portable media archive (SD card). The X1S has no such problems, though dragging it back and forth from work is not happening. The power brick is like a Shot Put ball with a tail! However, I like the overall styling as a matter of personal preference. My one major complaint is that the cord length from brick to unit barely reaches from floor to the top of my desk. Basically, the brick has to be placed directly beneath the unit, or elevated somehow. Additionally, upside down printing of some input/output is, in my opinion, difficult to decipher, especially where coax/rca overlaps. I don't have the ears to comment on how a "superior DAC chip" did or did not color my music, but I received the impression things were a bit more "analytical/transparent" with the X1S than with either the X3 or the Q1. I prefer transparency. Driving he560: X7S comes out ahead The Bravo Ocean is a small hybrid tube amp that boasts big sound out of a little package. This is true, in some respects, but its "power" comes from high gain (+30dB) and not from pure wattage. The simile that comes to mind is the difference between a lamp light and a flashlight. The Bravo is like the flashlight; a narrow but bright focusing of a low power source. Once I found a suitable tube (the stock was garbage) it worked beautifully with my 25-Ohm Fostex TH-X00. Yet, it sounded so terrible with my he560 that I almost returned them as defective. The main issue was that the sound seemed "over-blown." It was "sloppy" and the bass notably weak and distorted. It clearly was not meant for the he560s. In single-ended/unbalanced configuration, both the Q1 and the X3 were too quiet for he560 listening. The X7S has no trouble driving my 45-Ohm he560 in single-ended configuration, at all. I keep it set to +12dB gain to suit both my TH-X00 and he560 headphones. Everything is clean, clear and punchy. It brought my he560s to life! Where single-ended is great, balanced is phenomenal! Extrapolating, balanced provides nearly double the power (~1.5W(Bal) vs ~800mW(UnB)) and the he560s (and I) love it! I'm currently having my TH-X00s re-cabled for balanced listening, but they already sound great on all my gear. I fully expect to experience nirvana when I finally get them hooked up to the X7S via XLR ;-) I have a few complaints though. 1.) RCAs on my unit were mounted a little crooked. Doesn't affect sound, but an aesthetic flaw nonetheless. 2.) The dip switches for gain changes are on the bottom of the unit which makes changing them a pain. They are also quite deep and tiny, requiring a tool to manipulate. 3.) Dip switch instructions are not clear. I had to experiment with my ears to understand that one set of switches configures the left channel, and the other set the right, while the settings graphics apply to both. I do not understand the logic behind separating gain per channel on a headphone amplifier, but I'm sure someone with a niche L/R mono setup was pleased. :/ To better compare with my Fiio gear: I picked up an XLR to 2.5mm trrs balanced adapter over the holidays and experimented with the X3 and the Q1 in balanced configurations. Surprisingly, both performed to my ears similar to the X7S in terms of clarity and punch with the he560s. Not surprisingly, volume was not there. The Q1 offers the more powerful balanced option (~180mW @45-Ohm), but at MAX levels both were disappointingly quiet and both suffered distortion. Good for just-before-bed listening, but not much else. for me TL;DR: X1S: Not a portable DAC like Fiio Q1 or X3, but did not suffer their PC hifi streaming issues. Seems more transparent. X7S: Brought my he560 to life. Nice unbalanced output. Excellent balanced output. Some confusing design choices respective gain switches. Both: Power brick is fortunately not a wall wart, but big and heavy otherwise. Brick to unit cord length is a bit short. Edit 2019/04/07: Cord length is unacceptable in my opinion and there is no possibility to swap out for a longer option due to hard-wiring at both ends. This severely limits placing capability. The only reason I can imagine for this poor design choice is to prompt buyers to add XP1 Linear power supplies to their carts for ~$100 USD/each. Even then, good luck finding a longer cable. I picked up an S.M.S.L. SU-8 recently, as I have ambitions of a balanced dac-amp system. I have compared both the X1S and the SU-8 through the X7S amp with identical source and interconnects/cables. X1S at 2.1v RMS (RCA-out) is notably louder than the SU-8 at 2.0v RMS (RCA-out). My ballpark guess would be somewhere between 3-6dB louder. It's hard to believe 0.1v would account for such a difference, but it is undeniably there. Short of volume, the SU-8 (default settings) and X1S sound equal to my ears. Any "coloring" nuance is well below my ability to detect. Feature-wise, the SU-8 blows the X1S out of the water, but that is an apples-to-oranges comparison.

I got the X1S, it arrived sooner than I expected it to by more than a month, and came in really nice packaging. The USB manual wouldn't work for me, but I was able to find a copy of the manual online, plus the DAC/Amp itself is pretty simple to operate.
I'm very pleased with the X1S in the few weeks that I've had it. This is my first standalone DAC or amp, so I didn't really have any expectations going in, but music sounds great coming through my desktop speakers or my 6XX. If the volume knob is at 7:30 at min volume, I never turn it past 10 when I'm listening, so it's plenty loud.
The black X1S I got looks really sleek in person, and it fits perfectly underneath my monitor riser. Audio comes in from my MacBook Pro via an optical cable, and goes to my powered desktop speakers via the RCA out. This amp doesn't automatically mute the pre-amp outs if there's a headphone plugged in, but that's not a huge issue since I can just turn off my speakers if I don't want to listen through them.
The only complaint I have is the same one that Zeos had in his review: the power cable sucks. The power supply is right in the middle of the cable, which means if I keep it up on the desk, it can barely reach the outlet, but if I keep it on the floor, the X1S has to be right at the edge of my desk. If you can get a short extension cable, that would be ideal, but Aune really needs to move the power supply to one end or the other.
All in all, I'm really happy with the X1S. The price was a huge bargain compared to similar setups, and it's been a great entry-level DAC/Amp for me so far.

20 weeks later: now I have the X1S, I could not resist... it is an excellent setup. X1S can drive my dt880 600 ohm with ease and sounds great! forget the Schitt setup, this one is much better, whole new experience. AKG K712 on x7s from x1s: amazing... the sound stage... like beign in concert hall... best seats!! listening to x7s with Periapt xlr cable and hd6xx, simply amazing. I think the extra power thru the xlr makes the headphones sound better, I cannot comment on xlr vs trs. I only know that xlr rigth now sounds amazing with 6xx.

I don’t think you did anything wrong. It’s not uncommon to have some hum with a new a DarkVoice. It’s old tech and those quirks about it can be charming or frustrating. I upgraded my tubes and had some hum in those when I initially put them in but it subsided over time and now they are very quiet. Not dead silence, but nothing perceptible when music is playing. I did the 100 hour thing on a Tung-Sol 6SN7 tube I purchased and the hum went away. Magic. My primary 6SN7 tube is a Shanguang Treasure. It’s expensive, but performs well and was quiet from day one. I never had any issues with the RCA or the Tung-Sol 6AS7 I have. My preferred setup is the RCA and the Treasure. I remember looking at the Little Dot before I bought the DarkVoice and don’t remember why I chose the DV over it. The most important thing is enjoying your music. i have been lusting over a couple of the Woo Audio amps but can’t justify the price. I have a hard time imagining how they can sound much better that my current DarkVoice-> 6XX setup.

mindhead1Thanks for the info, it drove me absolutely crazy that I could not get rid of the hum. At medium + volume it was not noticeable but at night when I would run it lower because of the sleeping wife and open headphones I could hear that damn hum which did nothing but aggravate me. I was going to do a review on it but being so new to tube amps I decided not to because I could not rule out the human factor. In the end I wound up selling it to a friend who didn't care about the hum, he bought the DV and all the tubes from me and gave me what I spent so in the end it was a no lose situation (except for time .. lol). I have had people ask me how it compares to the DV but since I couldn't get it to work without hum I had to just say I don't know. If pushed I would say the LD MKII because it worked out of the box and when you are a newbee to tubes, that is what you want, something that doesn't have any issues. I said it earlier and will say it again, I absolutely love the LD MKII, it is, in my limited experience, the newbees dream tube amp because it works out of the box and you can get some really nice tubes that are not going to break the bank. I purchased some pretty expensive tubes from one of the bigger tube sites and wound up using the .99 cent special (not literally) off of Amazon because they produced a sound more in line with what I like when I am just chillin and enjoying a little me time music. If I had to say anything negative about the LD MKII it would be that they put that damn on/off switch in the worst place possible. It is on the back left as you look at it, right behind that giant transformer so you learn pretty quick not to reach over to turn it off... yeah... you only have to make that mistake once. With it being in the back you have 3 choices, 1: leave it on your desk in a spot where you can easily get to the back to turn it off. 2: Never turn it off. 3: (my personal favorite) put it on a smart plug and tell Alexa to turn the damn thing off for you.. lol. I also wish they would have put in a gain switch instead of an internal gain jumper, that would have been really helpful for people like me that have everything from low impedance headphones to 600 ohm headphones. That quick flip of a switch would have been nice instead of having to open it and jump it then be super careful so you don't blow something out. Looks wise, I just love it, sound wise, well I'm pretty sure you can tell that I love that as well. All in all I think it is the best buy for everyone but enthusiasts because the 90% of us that aren't can get great results without the huge price tag.

Gods, but I love this puppy, I mean DAC amp... it has become my desktop computer's DAC, because, using USB, you cannot get a better DAC, for the price, and it's specs beat out ANY sound card available, except maybe some very high end, for actual music production model. Sure, it doesn't do optical out, but, it does RCA out, which drives my Emotiva BasX A-100 just fine, which feeds my Darkvoice tube 6SN7 via pass through just as well. With this setup I can have 3 different headphones playing the same thing, at the same time, with different sound signatures, or just go back and forth between the lower amperage to see which sounds best for what one which headphone. I leave it on all the time, unlike the Darkvoice, and have used it for months, and highly recommend it, if it comes back on another drop, I will send people this way who have heard my setup and want something along the same lines.
