Grandpa is keeping these!!!
Bought these in the middle on an upgrade frenzy thinking I needed closed back headphones. Have always used Sennheiser and have the HD6xx with HD 58x and LCDX+SACD amp on the way. (Damn you Drop). Anyhow, can't return these so I though I would give them to my grandson. Box arrived damaged and ugly and thought I might as well open it. Once open, I decided to audition them and listen to my two favorite albums for auditioning sound equipment. (Patricia Barber: Modern Cool and or course Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon.) By the time I got to the final bass notes in Eclipse I was in love. I was expecting bass heavy and found that they had the right amount of slam and bass extension. I wasn't expecting much of a sound stage, but was surprised at how good it was. So, grandpa is keeping these.

(250Ω) No 6XXs, but closed back and crisp.
I don't have a lot of headphones to compare these to, but I have the CTH + SDAC and a pair of 6XXs and the pair is truly unbeatable. It's so good, I can't think of where I'd ever want to improve it. But my family could. The 6XXs are open back and bleed, to put it lightly. At the volume I like to listen to them at in an otherwise quiet room—you can fully identify the track. HOWEVER, in any room by yourself, the 6XXs are king. By a mile. Two. Four, maybe. Turn your music up and forget about it. Like the 6XXs, the DT770 Pros require an amp to be truly worthwhile, but even still, the 250Ω models require more power than the 300Ω 6XXs to reach a similar volume. That said, the clarity is great and they're comfortable and look just fine, but not as nice as the 6XXs. The open backs on those show off a particularly nice internal design. These just look like audio equipment, which is what they are, so... Res ipsa loquitur. Do I enjoy them? It really depends on a few factors. First, am I trying to block noise in or out? If so, these are great. Second, do I need positional audio—like for a game? If so, these also win. There is no spill over. And, lastly, do I need a clear high end? The DT770s at 250Ω have an impressive range—with an impressive low end and a crystalline high end. You really hear the upper and lower frequencies on these—not that the middle is subdued. I don't believe it is—I just think this is really good at delivering at the extremes so it gives the impression of a valley in the mid-section—but if you want to listen to any aspect, it's clear. And this is a mixed result in terms of the overall quality of the sound. The 6XXs just strike me as more amazing. These—more detailed—but not as encapsulating or thrilling. But what do I know? I only know what I like. And these are fine, but won't be my first choice except when I'm in a room with others or gaming, for which the clarity is helpful. For music listening—I'm going to reach for the 6XXs every time. What I think I can say about them is that they've convinced me I'm a casual listener and because of the high end aspect and because of the pronounced power draw, were I to order them again, I might order the 80Ω version, not that I've heard them myself. I do like the telephone cable A LOT, however. For a desktop amp sitting close enough to you to reach the volume—even with pretty long arms—it's perfect and looks great. I'd actually like one for the 6XXs. ALSO, because of the differences between the three models, 32Ω, 80Ω, and 250Ω, I think it would have been helpful for Dropbox to disambiguate the reviews if not the sale itself—because although I haven't heard the difference, from other reviews as much as the details on the box, they differ as much as the environments in which you might use them. One is for mobile use, two for "studio", with the 80Ω version superior in loud environments—but it's often reviewed to be superior for casual listeners as well because of that high end. It's expressive and crisp, but for music, unless you REQUIRE it to hear something specific, you're better off with the 6XXs. These are very clear, however, as well as comfortable and fine lookin'—and for closed backs are extremely affordable for the quality. The review is 4 stars out of my nod to the 6XXs—but the more I use these the more I like them. Nevertheless, if I could keep one—it would be the 6XXs without a second thought. ***** Update: I changed my review to 5 stars after becoming more familiar with these headphones and watching more movies with them: another place they excel. I still prefer music in the 6XXs, but when you want to hear speech and big sounds clearly, you can’t do better than the DT770s. The mild isolation plus the boom of the base and clarity of the high end make this a winner for games OR movies. So I’ll put it on parity with the 6XXs. The width of the soundstage mixed with the closed backs are a great combo—and the clarity of the high end really helps positional audio in games. It’s totally immersive, even at a modest volume. The 6XXs are a dream, but I end up using these even more often. Equally comfortable, more enveloping, but closed and without that extra breath, music doesn’t seem as lively or fresh. Movies and games don’t need that as much as clarity and big sounds—or with big sounds—and 250 ohm handle it at all levels with no distortion (either—the 6XXs with a good amp also don’t distort, even with tons of it. It only gets louder and clearer).

Great Closed Back Option
I don't need to wax poetic about the headphones. I like them a lot. Originally, my first pair of "nice" headphones were the HD 6XXs, and I LOVE those headphones, they're warm and sound beautiful in a bunch of different ways that I'm not particularly adept at describing. And yes, I am aware that I am not reviewing the HD 6XXs here, but bear with me. I got the HD 6XXs because I like warm vocals and more indie and classical music. But then the pandemic happened, and my partner is a 8th grade English teacher and, at the time, we lived in a 1 bedroom apartment in Los Angeles. I love her and she loves me but I didn't want to hear her lessons three times a day underneath my music, and she didn't want to hear my music leaking if she didn't have to. So I bought these, knowing that the sound signature is very different compared the HD 6XXs, They are excellent. Many people have written a lot of things about what these sound like, especially in comparison with the HD 6XXs. I found much of it to be true, so you don't have to sit through the redundancy of a review here. They Beyers are perfect for my use case while my partner continues to teach at home and I continue to work from home. I can get good, full music into my ears without hearing her same lesson taught three times a day and she doesn't have to hear second hand music. When she isn't teaching or when I can close the door, I switch back and forth between the HD 6XXs and the Beyers especially depending on the type of music I'm in the mood for. Having both compliments a wide range of listening!

Gifted to a friend
As an audio content producer and music composer, I spend an awful lot of time in cans. While I prefer the Sennheiser 650s [Drop 6XX!] for music composition and tracking, these DT770s are the studio workhorse cans for all recording and editing tasks. This would have been my 3rd pair but I gifted this pair to a friend who has been using a lesser quality set of headphones for critical listening and editing. I know what I've done. I've ruined him and possibly destroyed his family life. I'll probably get hate mail from his wife one day when she tires of him refusing to remove his headphones.

I know these things are like a billion years old at this point but it's still hard to not be amazed, especially at the price point these are now at. Coming from the ATH M40x's as my daily drivers, I can't even fathom how I used to listen to music. That sounds really hyperbolic, and it kind of is, but when people say these things have soundstage they were not kidding. Bass is just right, not overpowering and music is overall a joy to listen to on these. Amazingly comfortable. Which bring me to the conclusion that considering the aforementioned price point, these which used to be considered high end cans, should still be given recognition and your consideration for your first pair of really really good headphones a decade later and counting.
Just a quick edit to anyone who is revisiting this page since the drop reopened: If you get one of the black editions, they are absolutely gorgeous.

domcobb1Very nice choice, Beyer is my favorite maker and I've heard just about everything, by anyone. Beyer always had the best balance of sound and value, IMO. The 770/880/990 are the best buys in audio, IMO and I'm a big lover of the 880. I remember the m40x sound, very, very lifeless. Small and narrow soundstage even for a closed-back, bass-heavy for a supposed neutral can (imo), lack of detail throughout the whole range, very unrefined treble that could be hot in certain instance... I could see them for monitoring alone and even then I'd much rather use a dt150 (better balance).

Didn't think I was a Beyer person. I was wrong!
These are the most recent cans I've bought in the last few years. I've bought 6 or 8 pairs over the last 4 or 5years. I almost bought these on impulse just to see what the Beyerdynamic sound was all about. Best impulse buy I've ever made. I believed too much of what I had read about Beyer. The bass IS NOT anemic and they are not sibilant. They're near perfect to my ear. The stage could be wider but they're closed backs. They make me want a pair of DT 990's for when I'm not worried about disturbing those around me. I'm definitely a Bayer sound signature person as opposed to a Sennheiser. I guess I learned something about myself.

They're brighter, more accurate, faster. Most of my friends love the Senns sound. I used to live the sound of the original "Walkman" type ultra lights back in the day. Unfortunately the nicer Senns that I've owned or used sound muffled to me through the entire spectrum but especially in the highs. They almost sound out of phase to me. I get used to it and they sound good but if I put on a different set of cans with the same music at the same volume the new cans sound better, crisper, livelier. It's probably the Senns need a bit more power but it's not like the Bayers are efficient (at least mine). Neither of them hold a candle to my old HiFiMan bottom of the line plants. They're the same model as the Drop HE4 or 400. They're hands down the best (to my ear) cans I've ever used or owned, including HiFiMans and Audeze plants that cost 5-10x as much......so many cans, so little time.😜

Got the 250 Ohm model. The Apogee Groove is more than enough to drive these headphones. Apogee's Constant Current Drive detects when the headphones are under-driven and provide enough "oomph" so that audio quality does not drop. Only thing I don't like about the groove is it doesn't support MQA. (No MQA debates please lol) I tested mine with the included pads and enjoyed how comfy they were. I don't like the velour/fabric material, so I replaced them with Dekoni Audio Memory Foam replacement pads after about 6 hours of usage. These pads greatly decreased noise leakage, so if you work in an office environment and don't want to disturb your peers, you can opt for these pads. They also change the comfort level a bit. I think it's easier to wear them for extended periods with the memory foam pads vs the included ones. Because of the increased amount of isolation provided by the pads, there is a slight perceived increase in bass and a change in soundstage as well. This is all of course up to personal preference, but with these headphones, everything is possible since everything is accessible and modifiable by the user. I have the 80 Ohm model as well and I can say that the 250 Ohm model offers a much more neutral/reference sound whereas the 80 Ohm model is easier to drive and tends to have a little more pronounced bass than the 250 Ohm model. The 250 Ohm model includes a coiled cable whereas the 80 Ohm model has a very long straight cable that is harder to manage in my opinion. Comfort on these is the best reason to get them. I can wear them for hours and not get ear fatigue. They also pair well with glasses and don't press too hard if your head is on the larger size. As far as "burn-in" period, there is a "burn-in" period with these headphones, but it's not what you'd think. They will slowly adjust to your head shape over time and become more comfortable with use. It's more of a break-in period. Enjoy your headphones and let me know if you have any questions. I've had the 80 Ohm model since 2009. Lastly, Massdrop did a great job with this one. Shipping was quick and the updates were useful! Thanks Massdrop team!

I wanted a nice set of cans for the workplace and decided to get the 80 Ohm model paired with the Massdrop O2/SDAC. I didn't know to expect since this was my first step into the audiophile scene. I was very surprised the the clarity. I listen to mostly trap and hip hop. The bass is nice and punchy. I started listening to some of my favorite bass tracks and I heard new sounds. It was like hearing them for the first time again. The pads are kind of firm but still comfortable. I can wear them over my glasses easily. The sound does bleed a little but only noticeable if someone is standing next to you, or it's really quiet. Overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

Simply the best headphones for all around use. Accurate enough for the studio, clear enough for serious listening. The lower impedance is a good match for most portable players. Closed back design is also good for listening when others are nearby.

Haha! Good catch, TreeFrogs. Should say “most” not “lost”. Would require much Longer cord to work with lost players.

these are a must have. period. 15+ headphones later and these are among my best enjoyable sets. I wish cable was detachable. My iphone x and SE can power nicely at 95% volume and music is still enjoyable, for insane volume you must have an amp. I love the pros for the clamp which makes isolation among the best; very comfortable pads.
