I know these things are like a billion years old at this point but it's still hard to not be amazed, especially at the price point these are now at. Coming from the ATH M40x's as my daily drivers, I can't even fathom how I used to listen to music. That sounds really hyperbolic, and it kind of is, but when people say these things have soundstage they were not kidding. Bass is just right, not overpowering and music is overall a joy to listen to on these. Amazingly comfortable. Which bring me to the conclusion that considering the aforementioned price point, these which used to be considered high end cans, should still be given recognition and your consideration for your first pair of really really good headphones a decade later and counting.
Just a quick edit to anyone who is revisiting this page since the drop reopened: If you get one of the black editions, they are absolutely gorgeous.

domcobb1Very nice choice, Beyer is my favorite maker and I've heard just about everything, by anyone. Beyer always had the best balance of sound and value, IMO. The 770/880/990 are the best buys in audio, IMO and I'm a big lover of the 880. I remember the m40x sound, very, very lifeless. Small and narrow soundstage even for a closed-back, bass-heavy for a supposed neutral can (imo), lack of detail throughout the whole range, very unrefined treble that could be hot in certain instance... I could see them for monitoring alone and even then I'd much rather use a dt150 (better balance).
