I spent a couple of days with the DT990 250ohms and then ending up buying the DT880 Premiums in 250ohms (paid about US$175). The answer to your question is 'it depends on what you are using them for'. My opinion is that for music, the DT880 is significantly better (neutral, natural) than the DT990. To my ears, the treble on the DT990 is harsh and metallic, to the point where the instruments warp into electronic clanging. The DT880 has a lot of treble sparkle, but not to the point of 'near pain', and is detailed but somewhat natural. In terms of bass, the DT990 has more of it than the DT880, but again it's quite artificial-sounding to me.
BUT - if you're looking for headphones for gaming, the DT990s are very good. They have a massive soundstage, which gives a 3D effect when gaming. The soundstage on the DT880 is absolutely fine for music, but yeah, for gaming, the DT990 will impress more.
