I went a bit crazy buying headphones recently. I'm just a fan though, don't mistake me for someone who knows anything. 😅 My at the office pair is now the Beyerdynamic DT770 (closed back, 80 ohm). For me the DT880 Premiums (250 ohm) are a noticeable improvement, from the better headband (), softer pads, and a generally more relaxing sound. These wouldn't be as good for the office though, due to their open backs and higher resistance (not great on a Schiit Fulla). At home I have a Schiit Magni AMP paired with an SMSL M100 DAC, and it's an extremely pleasant listening experience. I'm going to need many more hours with these, but they definitely deserve to play ball with the other great value Massdrop headphones. Compared to other cans:
  • My previous work pair was an original AudioTechnica ATH-M50 with new pads. These I found to be too warm, and I'm liking not sweating to death in the office thanks to the DT770's. A good pair, but I'm feeling myself preferring my new cans.
  • Today got the Sennheiser 6XX's. I'm going to need more time with both to pick a preference. Both have excellent sound. Between the two, I feel like I might be able to work longer in the DT880's, due to the looser head clamping pressure, but so far I've only really noticed the clamping once I remove them. Hearing them side by side, I could go either way (it might be song dependent). Today I think I'd give a slight edge to the DT880's, but that's probably because I'm used to them, and it might not be fair once I can go balanced with the 6XX's. I like both!
  • Hifiman 4XX's were my first new pair, and are also my first planar magnetic headphone. By recommendation I swapped the pads for a Hybrid pad sold here on Massdrop, and dang, it really upped the comfort. Stock I would say the DT880's are more comfortable, but with new pads the Hifiman takes the comfort lead. There's a precision to the DT880's I think I like better, but the Hifiman are really great. I'm curious what sort of improvement balanced will make.
I wanted some good mixing/mastering headphones, and I'm honestly torn between the DT880's and the 6XX's, which is exactly where I wanted to be. I could survive just fine with only one of them. What I've learned: Good headphones are good, and PC's/phones ship with terrible DAC+AMP's.

Beautiful
The best headphone I have used in the 200$ range. They sound so natural. People who buy them really needs to used them for a few days to really enjoy and appreciated the sound signature. They first time i used them I found them flat and boring. Just give them time and your ears will adjust to them to dicover how wonderful they sound. The bass response is what i like the most, it feels weird they sound and feel like my own heartbeat which adds an immersive factor to games. Not even the dt990 and fidelio x2hr have this natural tight bass ( dt990 more quantity but booming, fidelio bloated and booming bass). I ordered the 600 ohm version. They replace my best headphone spot surpassing the Sundara. Recommended

Alfredo3001I have actually read that these headphones are famous for getting better over time cause the break in time is extensive. People leave them going around the clock sometimes when they first get to achieve better sound. https://support.beyerdynamic.com/hc/en-us/articles/201875262-Do-I-need-to-burn-in-my-headphones-

I love em but my slider broke
I am actually really glad I got these. I usually rock my 6XX, and i love those as well for detail and warm clarity. These added a fun side for when I'm feeling gitty. I wasn't a fan of the beloved stock pads, but through searching I found out that Brainwavz now makes their pads with micro suede and...oh my. These cans with some XL micro suede pads it's where it's at for me. I would love a removable cable but i can just do that mod myself. And to finalize on the case. It actually is pretty nice that it even comes with a quality one that is not a monster in size like the Monolith cans come with. Highly recommend these if you are trying to upgrade from a sub-100 pair you may have been rocking for a while. EDIT: After months of use and loving the sound profile of these headphones I am sad to realize that one of the slider covers is cracked. Im going to have to see if I can get a 3D printed replacement since the plastic sold by beyer will probably be the same fragile quality.

I purchased these after struggling to make a decision between the DT880s and the Sennheiser HD600s. Oh man, I am not disappointed. I got the Pro 250 ohm model and they sound gorgeous with everything so far, from funeral doom metal (Ahab’s “The Boats of the Glen Carrig”) to classical (Tartini’s Violin Sonata “The Devil’s Trill”). I have almost zero experience with higher end audiophile grade headphones and am a total newbie in this realm, but holy crap these sound good. Everything sounds well balanced (neutral and flat, no overpowered bass or anything) and crystal clear. They’re also EXTREMELY comfortable.

I have regular DT880 Pro and had HD600. Story is that I bought HD600, tested for a week and few days, returned back and replaced with DT880 Pro. Apart headband cover that fallen apart, they really really good (needs EQ, but all headphones do). IMHO, most HD600 and related sound odd. Like they quite good, but its not what I would describe as signature Sennheiser sound, they never "clear" enough. Just sorta muffled a bit (and no, I didnt test just one amp). And yes, had also HD 650. I actually like Sennheiser (got other headphones from them, two actually), but HD 6xx line? Mm, nope. Only HD660S seems nice, at least based on response curve. But didnt test them yet. Sennheiser has one advantage, which is that they actually know what ergonomics mean. Beyerdynamic definitely not. But could be worse. DT880 is definitely bearable for longer periods of time.

I have been enjoying audio nirvana for almost 10 days now since I received these headphones, so I guessed as well I would write a review, if it can help other people join the club. Let me summarize my recent portable audio set-up, to give you an idea of where I come from:
  • Fiio X3 and later X5 with Grado GR10
  • iPhone 7 Plus (VOX app) + DragonFly Black + Shure SE-215 and more recently Noble Audio X (yes, also from Massdrop)
I think I am getting a glimpse via this set-up of what hi-fi (some might call it mid-fi instead) should sound like, so I guessed: why not take a chance and try to get a similar hi-fi sound at home, too? To that purpose, I have been actively reading online reviews recently, and I made my mind to try the following combination: Beyer DT 880 + Schiit Modi + Magni. So I was very happy to see the drop on the DT 880 here. Last week I received the DAC & amp + the headphones (all in the same shipment from myUS), and I could not wait to check whether the performance of the headphones and the amp lived up to the hype. So what’s the verdict? In one (composite) word: mind-blowing! I am in all honesty struggling to believe that by investing barely USD 400 I can enjoy such audio quality. And, while I am sure TOTL Beyer T1 and any fancy amp would improve the fidelity, I am honestly starting to wonder whether the price difference would be (remotely) worth it. Let’s summarize my in-house set-up: the same iPhone 7 with my entire FLAC library plugged (via the clunky Apple camera adapter) into the USB entry of the DAC (never remember which one of the Modi and Magni is the DAC / amp, sorry), which is powered separately via the other USB entry. The DAC output is plugged to the amp via a typical and not particularly fancy red / white analog cable, and the DT 880 plugged straight into the amp. Since I plumped for the 600 ohm version, I am using the high gain setting (lever up), and I am enjoying blissfully clear and loud sound without even approaching the 25% gauge on the volume wheel. While no expert at all at the split between sound frequencies and these kinds of technical details, let me try and provide some clarification from a layman pespective:
  • You may have heard that the 880s are ‘clinical’, ´neutral’ sounding. Not sure what this should mean as sound signature, but let me assure you: the sound I am getting is by no means artificial or robotic sounding. It is quite warm, and in one word, simply crystal-clear and amazing.
  • I am maybe most impressed with the bass. I do not think I had heard precise bass before, and it is very satisfying: not boomy at all, but full of impact (and, when requested for, well accompanied by sub-bass). I can only wonder what the 990 will sound like, if they are roughly the same but boosted on the bass. For me, no need for boosting whatsoever...
  • I can understand that these cans are considered to be ‘on the bright side’, a little more treble-oriented than mid-centric. Indeed, when I compare with the Noble Xs, vocals tend to sound sexier and slightly more present in the mix than with the Beyers, but at the price of increased detail in the latter. The pairing with the Schiit might also not be ideal in that sense, and in the future I may be tempted to try some tube amps for their (purported) warmer signature: never tried them yet! (fledgling and aspiring audiophile that I am...).
  • Finally, a note on the open back (also a first for me): it is not really that isolation is non-existent, or that the whole house will be listening to your music in tandem with you. While of course a reasonably quiet environment is required to take advantage of the sound quality, while music is playing you will not be able to hear most noises around you, and the volume of music ‘bleeding’ outside is relatively low (at least at the volume levels I have been using). And yes, the soundstage (or head-stage) is increased, but you can still very much realize that the sound is coming from headphones.
In a nutshell: very strongly recommended. It is highly likely that you will, as I do, wonder how a pair of headphones costing barely USD 150 can sound so amazingly good.

Let me start be saying I am new to the audiophile world. I picked up these DT880 250 Ohm headphones and paired them with a Schiit Vali 2/ Modi stack. I used the headphones for a couple weeks before I received the Schiit Amp/Dac. I really enjoyed the sound and didn't find it to Bright at all, and was very happy with the low end. Once I added the Vali 2, it made the sound come alive, it was fun, clearer and a little warmer. I listen to a variety of music, from jazz and acoustic to rock and some hip-hop, and think the setup does well with pretty much anything. The DT880s are well built, look great and sound even better. And I think the Schiit Vali 2 is a perfect match.

Awesome, light, DT880s
There is little to say about these tried and tested cans. They are light, sound great, comfy and this version in particular looks amazing in black on black on black. Love them!

I thought there are so many better choices for the same price. The 1 more triple driver's, the akgk7xx the Sennheiser hd6xx. Those are sooooo good in different ways. The Hifiman he4xx is great too and then we can discuss so many choices at this price that are good. But these.... they just.... were not. At least not out of the box. Actually. They weren't good for 2 weeks.... Heck they felt better and better and after 6 months still not at full potential. They're weren't bad per se., I liked the build and they are comfortable from the get but I thought, If I did not purchase these...that would be fine. But I guess that's what this hobby is about. Finding out for yourself. I have the 600ohm version BTW. Original score. 3. Now after a very... very long break in. 4 stars. After a few more months maybe 5. My original description.. muddled sound, unimpressive in every way. Too much bass... no separation or depth. Just not good. I literally worn them once, then tried to break them in playing all night. Listened to them again and put them away. I have too many good choices to waste my time with these.... at least that's what I thought. :/ Then I left them playing for 2 nights (24 plus hours) and they finally sounded better. 3 more listening sessions.... better and better. Finally!!!! Mind you, I just wanted my money's worth and was trying to see what I could do to fix an unimpressive headset. I'm glad I did! Using a topping nx4 DAC with a Emotiva BasX 100 headphone amp stacked at relatively high volume did the trick. No longer muddled, clear mids, voices came alive. Still very comfortable as I noted out of the box. Now they get the score they deserve. Just be prepared at the beginning for a long break in. BTW, even with the long break in, at $200 I'd start with those other options listed up top. But if you have a great amp and time, I think these will continue to only get better. 600 ohms.... I knew what I was doing. Lol.

piedrafriaI have a fully broken in pair of these and I agree that they are pure magic. Their sound is similar to Senn HD600 but a little more engaging, and I prefer the contour these have through the mids and treble. I have the DT770 2005 Premium Edition 250 ohm and they have more "slam" and a sort of teutonic violence that's good for metal, but the 880 Special Edition are just so much more comfortable for everything else. The fluffy velour earpads and the voicing of these headphones (different from 880 Pro or Premium 250/600 ohm) can be enjoyed for hours, and these are my go-to music listening headphones. I can only use the 770's with my THX 789 amp or warmer-sounding amps, but the 880's go well with any of my amps - even the cheap ones. I really hope these can come back for Drop customers so I can get a couple pairs to give to friends.

很棒! 我用Topping NX4DSD來推它,分離度夠。開聲就讓我個人覺得不錯,聲音好到讓我開始嫌棄MSR7。 大家都說拜耳家的耳機需要run夠3000小時才能發揮它的水準!!

C.J.LiuTranslated: It's excellent! I'm driving it with the Topping NX4DSD, the degree of separation is sufficient. Personally, upon initial listening it struck me as decent; in fact, it sounds good enough that I'm starting to neglect my MSR7! People say the diaphragms of Beyer headphones require 3000 hours to reach their full potential!! O_O
