Product Description
While many headphones make you choose between an open- and closed-back construction, the Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro splits the difference with a semi-open design that allows for increased airflow and a wider soundstage. It brings full depth and excitement to the entire range, with a smooth, extended treble; a transparent, detailed midrange; and a punchy, layered bass Read More

Great sounding headphones, especially at this price point. They are easily driven by my Mac laptop and iPhone X.

Clean, clear and rich detail - but power hungry
This is my second Beyerdynamic headphone ever, after trying out a second-hand Custom One Pro earlier this year made me curious about the Beyerdynamic house sound. The DT880 Pro was a little bit surprising to me in ways (both good and bad) that I did not expect. For this reason, I’m going to write this review in bullet point style (apologies for the lack of coherent structure and the whingy tone - I really do like these headphones):
search
  • For a start, this headphone is a lot lighter than it looks in pictures, and is easily among the lightest full-size headphones I own - approximately the same weight as a Sennheiser HD600 / 6XX / 58X Jubilee, but more evenly distributed.
  • The clamping force was a bit tight in the beginning, but again less so than the Sennheiser headphones I mentioned above.
  • One of the things that really annoyed me in the beginning was that the pads are nowhere near as comfortable as they look - both stock and velour (EDT 770 V) pads on the Custom One Pro were *much* more comfortable than the DT 880 Pro Black ones. Even after wearing the black ones in for a couple of weeks, I had to wash and sun dry them once to get them to comfortable levels - after a month of use, now they’re finally properly comfortable (my COPs settled down into their velour pads much faster).
  • When it arrived, the earcups were a bit skewed - one side was lower than the other. I think this is because of the way they are packaged in the box (angled cardboard stand), and then I think another heavy package must have sat on top of this (it took ages to reach me even after arriving in my country, due to COVID-19) to deform the headband. Even after stretching it out regularly, there is still a touch of imbalance between the earcups that drives me crazy.
  • This thing is power hungry - even on my CTH+SDAC (which outputs 1W I think), I’m constantly past 12 noon on the volume dial for loud sources (e.g.: TIDAL) and past 3 pm on normal sources (e.g.: YouTube). This is the 250 Ohm version, but I find it more power hungry than the 300 ohm Sennheiser HD600 as well as the planar magnetic HE4XX. For the first time in years, it feels like I don’t have a powerful enough amp 😂
  • Coming to the sound, however - this thing is incredibly clear and accurate from practically any source powerful enough to drive it to a decent volume. Male vocals in particular shine on these. However, being accurate and neutral means that they are utterly unforgiving of badly recorded sound and are one of the few headphones I have where I immediately know if the TIDAL track is a HiFi or Master version when I’m running music on shuffle mode and reading emails or browsing the web with TIDAL running in the background. Bass is surprisingly impactful for an open back (or “semi-open” as Beyerdynamic calls it) headphone and I don’t find the treble sharp at all (despite being a bit sensitive to this, and hating my HE4XX when it’s having a sibilant day).
  • This is a gorgeous pair of headphones to look at, whether I’m wearing them or they’re sitting on my desk or hanging off a headphone hanger (see picture) 😊

I do have both and like both, but the HD58X is way more comfortable straight out of a phone or an entry-level amp. I can’t stress enough that the DT880 250 ohm really needs a proper amp 😬

Sennheiser_FanboiYeah, the Sennheisers play louder than the 250 ohm beyers with less volume even though they have a higher impedance. I have noticed that with mine. Impedance is not static, and changes with frequency, plus the HD 6XX have a higher sensitivity per mW. Anyway, do not worry about the volume knob being really high. That's the proper way to use an amp. Your amp is fine and has enough power. Now, if you had to max out the volume to get a decently loud level on high impedance headphones, the amp is underpowering them, and is distorting. You'd need something more powerful. On the contrary, if you have to set the knob almost to the minimum so you don't go deaf with low impedance headphones, in that case the amp has too much gain for them and you'd need something less powerful so you can use the volume knob's range. It's why some amps have gain settings. For example, my CEntrance DACport HD in low gain maxes out the volume with my high impedance headphones and sounds puny, so I have to switch it to high gain. The headphones are transformed. It feels good to say, "Ooh, I just barely turn the volume knob and they're blasting", because it makes the amp seem really powerful, but it's not a power thing, but a gain thing. Ever since I read that from an amp designer, I confidently crank my volume knobs on low gain to 12:00 on my external amps. 🤓 Sorry for being so wordy, but I like to share my findings. I'm always learning and like to save people some time and possible worries. 😁

For the money, they get a 5. They are comfortable and sound great for this price range.
Very comfortable fitting headphones. They keep sounding better and better as they break in more. Very smooth overall sound.

Kocho-ShinobuFor my ears, yes. S9 can be wired too, if one wants it that way. That's how I mostly use it. I found the 880 a bit bright in the higher frequencies. Both are excellent but Pioneer/Onkyo just have a certain sound that I find both musical and warm.

BeyerDynamic DT 880 Pro (Black 250 ohm Edition 11:42 AM 1/19/2021 Well, this is embarrassing. The review of the Beyerdynamic DT 880 below needs to be revisited. I discovered two flaws. One with the 'phones and one with my perception. I can't do a full redo, but I need to point out the mechanacal flaw in the machining of the adapter. I was doing some comparisons of the Shure SRH 1840 and the DT 880 when I happened to slightly torque the adapter of the DT 880 while it was plugged in and audio was playing. Something dramatic happened. It took some time to determine the adapter was allowing both the right and left channel to connect together inside the adapter. This results in mono and a difficult load for the amp as the channels are now connected together. The temporary fix is to slightly unscrew the adapter. This is poor quality of an apparently simple part, the 'phones are very different now. I am really embarrassed that I did not recognize the sound was mono. It is entirely possible the Cavelli Tube Hybrid was shutting down due to the short between channels. I'll redo the listening test when I can, but wanted to get this out here as soon as possible. Scott 11:43 AM 1/20/2021 Tested the DT 880's with the Cavelli Tube Hybrid last night with some dynamic classical music. There were no problems driving the 'phones by the amp with the short removed. So, the problem was not the high impedance at all. I am pleased that both Cavelli amps behaved well with a shorted output. This could have caused permanent damage. Scott Original comments: The friendly robot at Drop has asked me to write a review of my recent purchase of the Beyer Dynamic DT 880 Pro (Black 250 ohm Edition) headphones. Here is my opinion of them so far with about seven hours of listening. In summary I like them. They have good bass that makes it easy to follow bass lines in jazz and feel the power of electric bass in pop and rock. There was enough detail in vocals to hear the many layers of production added to a singer’s performance or to enjoy a singer’s performance without those layers. They are built really well and I enjoy knowing that they are made in Germany. I heard some great music with them including rock and jazz. A jazz piece had a cello solo in it (Wayne Shorter, alegria) that was truly magic. Chrissie Hynde's vocal on Hollywood Perfume was a marvel of production layers the DT 880's resolved with ease. A compilation of Eric Clapton with tracks from Cream and his later solo work was so good I kept listening long after auditioning one track on it. However, if I was to own only one pair of 'phones, I am not sure I would choose these for all around use. My history with headphones is very long, but frankly not critical. They were tools I used as an announcer and as a broadcast engineer. My audiophile pursuits date back to the dawn of stereo, but headphones did not rise to audiophile performance until recently and it is a great way to pursue the goal of high fidelity in a more compact and less expensive form. I use one of two Cavelli amps once available from Drop, either the Tube Hybrid or the all solid state LCX. They were driven with the same transport, DAC and preamp as my stereo. The stereo has large 12 " two way DIY speakers with large format horns on top. They measure nearly flat across the band covered by the horns, but are pretty ragged in the bass, which is due in part to room acoustics. I mention the stereo system as it provides some reference point. My usual headphones, Shure SRH 1840's are very close to the frequency response of the horns and somewhat better in the bass, except the woofers can shake floors, the 'phones don't. Smile. The DT 880's do not match the horns, but have much better bass response that allows following the bass lines up and down scale. The DT 880's seem a little darker with a sense of greater distance to the musicians than the SRH 1840's and neither 'phone comes close to the sound stage of the speakers.  I preferred using the solid state Cavelli LCX for my listening as it benefits the Shure's in the bass. The beyers's needed no help. I should note the Beyers required far more gain from the Cavelli and I tried to match levels and remain aware that a louder headphone will sound "better".  After I wrote this, I switched to the Tube Hybrid with the Beyers and it shut down several times until I gave up and went back to the Cavelli LCX. This is likely due to the 250 ohm impedance of the Beyer headphones. The Beyers also caused my computer audio interface to clip on strong bass, too.  With seven decades on my ears, the highs I perceive are ... um ... weak. But the Shure were better with wire brushes on drums and with cymbals, too. With my hearing loss, I know when I hear really great highs that are way out in front on any system it means they are hyped if I can hear them that well. Neither the Shure or Byers were too forward in the treble range to my ears. A Telarc recording of Oscar Peterson and Milt Jackson pointed up one difference I had not noticed at first. The Shure could place instruments outside the headphones, the Beyre stayed just at the edge and not outside. The Shure has an open back, while the Beyers are "semi-open". Perhaps that accounts for the difference in sound stage. I could live with either of these models for music, but I think the DT 880's will be the ones for rock and the Shures for jazz and classical unless I get that craving for bass on something like the Telarc Appalachian Spring recording with a real thunderstorm. One last item to mention is the DT 880's heft. Slightly heavy with some clamping pressure, but not so uncomfortable as I fell asleep listening to music with them twice. Now that is real relaxation. The Shures are more comfortable. Note the Shures are three times the Drop price for the Beyers and the Beyers become a good choice. If you can hear them before purchase, by all means do so. Personal preference counts.

These don't sound like DT880s
The Beyerdynamic DT880 has long had a reputation as a neutral and clear headphone, with excellent detail and soundstage. So that's what I was kinda expecting. Unfortunately these Drop editions seem to have been tuned to be more bassy, so they don't much sound like DT880s anymore. Imagine a DT990 without the shrill top end, and that's closer to what these sound like to me. Consequently, they have more boomy midbass, less detail and poorer resolution than the other pair of DT880s I own. I don't necessarily dislike them. They are good if you enjoy a slightly bassier sound signature, which many people do. But they don't really stand out from the many other boomy consumer headphones out there. So why market them as DT880s?

So-so
I'm a recording engineer and music producer and a big fan of open or semi-open headphones as I have found that they often give me a good environment to check a mix and make soundstage adjustments. I generally use Sennheiser HD 650's along with Focal Spirit Pro (closed and no longer made) when I'm working, along with three pairs of near field monitors. I also love Beyer mics, especially their ribbon mics, so when I saw these 880's listed for sale, I made an impulse-decision to buy them. After they arrived, my initial listening tests were disappointing as the midrange was not very detailed, and the upper bass was blurry. I ran music through them for a week or so before trying them again and I think they sound a little better but still not useful for mixing. They are comfortable and seem to be well-built so I've been using them for video conferencing and other non-critical uses. I get that they're not in the same ball park as other HP's that I own, but I thought they would be at least on par with AT ATH-M50's but they're not even close (I know that the AT's are closed and won't sound the same, but I'm referring to the quality of audio reproduction). I'm hopeful that these will sound better after they've been properly burned in, but I'm not holding my breath.

deankatThanks for identifying the upper bass problem, I did note something in the bass that wasn't quite right. They are so much more powerful in the bass than my Shure SRH 1840's I'll overlook it. I also would not use these for mixing, despite the factory saying this is an intended use. Can't figure out the midrange. I was able to get a lot of information from it, but also felt that something was missing. For music enjoyment I like them, perhaps they are rounding off upper mids? .I am not hearing anything I really dislike and I think they will be a good addition to the stable. Sennheiser models are mentioned so much I may look into them next year. I used and loved the early 414s as an announcer decades ago.

Wonderful set of headphone
These are wonderful headphones, however my set’s left channel went dead just after 2 days of usage. Unfortunately the guys at Drop don’t care to answer one promptly and they take a long time to do so. Very sad.

These arrived missing two screws with the ear pieces unattached and flopping around the box. Drop wouldn't replace them (since they were sold through) or fix them because of their no warranty policy on this product. Currently contacting Beyerdynamic to send me some screws to fix them myself as these are the headphones I want. I'm sure they sound good but not a great customer service experience with Drop. I'm not normally a complainer but bummer, right?

Left speaker lost considerable volume, now I have to contact Beyerdynamic for warranty service.
10 weeks ago - I bought this Pro set on a previous drop. They are great on schiit stock. very good presentation of low and high ends even when they feel flat but good detailed sound and not exaggerated. not for bass heads. comfort is very good.

J_December_whyHad issue with 880-600 ohm. I bought my set in Canada, computer and other accessories chain. Left driver sounded way different than right one, highs down by a few dB. Sent it to Beyer Service in MA since they had 2yrs warranty. They came back with another driver that was even worse (bass loss and different highs) and 6.3mm screw on adapter missing! Actually, they messed up my address, so I was running to the post offices in order to get my package - thanx postal tracking system. Don't want to deal with them again.
