How do these compare to the HD6XX/650?
Less clamping pressure, less seal (due the round - not oval - pads), non-removable (but single-sided) cable, significantly bright sound.
They are nothing like the HD650.
Could you expand on that?
The HD650 is a darker sounding headphone. It is heavier in the mid-bass region. To me the HD650 is a more resolving headphone than the DT880. Some may think that doesn’t make sense, but in my experience with both, I learned not to mistake “brighter” for “more resolution and details.“ The HD650 has a richer, fuller sound, while the DT880 is lighter and airier.
Overall, the HD650 is a superior headphone from a sound perspective, but the DT880 is more than adequate.
I find the DT880 slightly more comfortable, as its pads are a little softer than the HD650. The DT880 also doesn’t seem to clamp on my head as much.
The HD650 comes with 1/4” jack standard and provides an extender with a 1/8” jack. The DT880 I have comes with 1/8” jack with a screw-on 1/4” jack adapter.
The HD650‘s cable is removable. The DT880’s is fixed.
I think a good headphone amp is needed for both cans. I have been told the HD650 scales well as your system improves. All I know is both are great cans, but the HD650 is a better can. My opinion, of course.
