Why not do a collab with Beyer so you can offer a set of MD x Beyer 880s that address the public's concerns (i.e. detachable cord, adjusted dynamics, upgraded pads, etc)?
I could not possibly agree more with you. The non-removable cable is the only reason I've completely written off the Beyerdynamic Pro line of headphones. Which is a darn shame since the sound quality is pretty highly regarded.
While I've never had any problems work my cable over the years of own my DT 880 Pros, it would certainly be a nice option. Heck, ANY user serviceability at all would be awesome.
I'll mod them detachable for you in your choice of connector, single or dual-entry for a modest fee. I've done it to 880s before and it's clean. I also do custom cables.
Got any pictures of the work you've done, so we can see how clean they look?
I'd be interested in seeing some pictures of the finished product as well.
Sure. DT880 was the first headphone I decided to do this to. Left side is on the right in this picture, the square is where I pushed out the piece holding the cable (it's sealed from the inside). The cleaner side is the one I made a hole for. That's a 2.5mm connector though, a 3.5mm would cover the whole square, or you can use a bigger washer. I was thinking about buying the hexagonal black washers for other projects. I'd still recommend single entry 3.5mm because I had to make a custom cable for it because there isn't many good ones around I'd be willing to pay for. I'm comfortable doing any connector though.
here's another headphone I just did a few weeks ago, it also required drilling into the chassis to fit the jack and it's clean (3.5mm jack).
And a custom cable I made for my Amiron Home just last week, canare star-quad wire was used.
I didn't see the photo's looks good
