Are there returns for this in case I don't like the sound? I have heard the sound can be pretty harsh to some ears (Im no audophile). Should I be worried about this?
Should you worry about it? Yes. It's not that the sound is harsh per se (because I think harsh is the wrong word), but the upper treble can be piercing on a lot of recordings, so any noise, distortion, clipping, dithering, quantization error, compression artifact, and flaw stand out obviously. It's a really unnaturally sharp treble, like you've probably never experienced before on headphones. Because the bass is a bit elevated and the mids are not upfront, the treble energy can stick out and bother your ears way before the mids and bass do.
All DT XXX models are very sensitive to the DAC/amp used, but the DT 990 are even more. Mine do not bother my ears when plugged to my Audient iD14, but on my Zoom TAC-2, they're really thin and sharp because it doesn't have the power to move them, plus its AK4396 DAC itself has a crystalline quality to its sound. On my Asgard 2 with the Denon DA-300USB DAC, they sound their best, like different headphones. The PCM1795 DAC on the Denon has a refined top, and the Asgard 2 itself has a tube-like quality to its sound, softening the uppermost frequencies without hiding any detail.
