So far so good
Pay shipping and custom tax living in EU - NO THANKS !!!
Well, I would be prepaired to pay fair postage for items manufactured in EU but NOT custom tax.!!!!
Massdrop - Please get your logistics right, why ship the lot to US ? Just to ship it back to Europe !!!
SILLY.
How difficult is it to create good customerservice for us in Europe ?
TreeFrogsYou work for Massdrop's marketing department? Is it really Massdrop's policy to push the global market to buy from their competitors? Or maybe you think the European market is too trivial for Massdrop to care about. And you must have missed that Massdrop has shipped other products directly from the manufacturer. Maybe your smart ass, unhelpful comment was missing the smart part, which would mean that it was just...
Trust me, Beyerdynamic and Darkvoice is what you want!!
Vintage GE 6080 power tube and a NOS Silvertone driver tube are just ridiculously good with the BD house sound.
How big is the soundstage compared to the HD 598 se? Will I regret buying this if I'm coming from a neutral sound signature? I need a new pair of headphones.
Measurements do not tell the entire story of a headphone. In which categories is the DT1990 "behind the 990"? By what measurement can you say that the DT1990 is "not entirely as open as the DT990"? You cannot say one is "better" or "worse" without hearing both, preferably in a direct comparison.
600 ohms? ... I guess this thing does not have enough power even when you plug it directly into the wall outlet. ... In all honesty tho... is there any reason to buy these instead of the BD 1990 pro or anything else really (concerning price/value equation)?
Well, in your case you surely won't be disappointed. I'm sure I also would not be disappointed, but probably would not be wowed by them. Not because they won't sound amazing, but because the DT 990 already sound fantastic. The improvement in sound quality and good attributes brought by higher-end models in my experience is much less than 50% if I could quantify it, because the lower-end models are already almost reaching the ceiling, since they were once the TOTL models. Out of the affordable headphones, I'd call the DT 990 the most impressive-sounding. I wouldn't call them the best of the DT series, since the DT 880 are flatter and smoother-sounding, but on first listen, they're the ones that have wowed me the most due to their sound presentation. The bass is tight and kicks very hard, the highs reach to the stratosphere, the background is totally black, and the soundstage is transparent. Sounds appear out of nowhere.
raansire7I will try to get a side-by-side comparison of the DT 990 and the DT1990 today, hoping that my local store has both in stock, to get first hand clearance on if i could justify paying more money myself. Im in that awkward position right now where i crave something but my ability to purchase will only be there in a week so i figured i could atleast get a taste beforehand. I guess this is what it means to be an adult ^^. Also buying the 990 would mean that i have a reason to get crafty again, not that i wouldnt try to jam in a 4pin mini-xlr-jack for balanced input into the 1990 but there is always that kind of mildly infuriating feeling when tinkering with stuff that costs more than your rent so i would not try it after all. Im all about personalization and giving stuff your own touch, making them unique which in that case would also be a point for the 990. But well i will try and decide then.
Thank you very much for your insights tho :)
Amazing headphones. Just before Christmas I bought the DT990 Edition 600 Ohm. They are pretty much identical if you neglect the color and the headband. For that price, they are pretty much the best headphones that you can buy. There are some other pretty good headphones in that price range, but none of them is actually beating the DT990 (they differ and it’s up for personal taste which one to pick, but none is objectively better).
They Show an incredible amount of detail (someone else called it “a very fine grain”) and the soundstage is amazing. When listening to a good recording of an orchestra you can pick every single instrument out and locate it. I’d say it sounds like you are 3m away or so.
If you can’t decide if you want to get the 250 or 600 Ohm version: go for the 600 if you have an Amp that is able to drive them. They sound better in every aspect. Wider soundstage, more detail, and the highs and lows are a bit less strong (something that people often criticize about the standard DT990).
If you want to get an Amp as well: IIRC the datasheets states that the 600 Ohm version is rated with 93dB/mV.
The Schiit Magni would be a good candidate if you still need an Amp (also the best you can buy for 100$)
WileEPyoteI don't disagree. I get tired of the "wire with gain" argument that people talk about a lot. Enjoyment is relative. I have a Schiit Lyr (original), which has some pretty awful measurable distortion. But I mean, I enjoy how it sounds, which is really all that matters. But I'm also one of those people who loves Audeze headphones, when other people hate them because they aren't as bright in the top. To each his own.
russ6366I have both DT990 600 ohm and Senn650/600
The Senn's focus on a lovely currated mid, whereas the DT990 has a very wide mid recession... They are more complementary than comparable.
If you want Beyer's take on a more balanced version of the rapid reflex drivers, try the DT880. I perssonally much prefer it to the 990 generally, but more importantly for your question, it is much closer to the Senns.
russ6366I've got 990 Pros and 6XXs and was actually comparing them this morning. They both sound great but as another commented pointed out, they are more complimentary than comparable. I'm no audiophile but I would describe the 6XX as having a fuller sound and I generally prefer them but I still reach for my DT990s often.
brown_bearDT990 have V shaped sound, with more emphasis on low and high frequency. Consequently, mids are recessed. HD6xx have more emphasis on mids and have some low end, but not as much as DT990. HD6xx has a flatter response, but HD6xx highs are attenuated and can sound veiled. Both headphones benefit from dedicated headphone amps. They are both good and depend on what you are looking for specifically.
brown_bearIf you have interest in mixing music, the Sennheiser 6xx is one of the best deals on the planet. Just a great pair. These DT 990s are in the same class, but the Sennheiser is really at a higher esteem from the opinions I've heard. Both are great. If someone asked me to pick one over the other, I'd pick Sennheiser. I wouldn't fault anyone for buying these, but note the 600 ohm impedance is a different beast. You can get the DT 990s at 250 ohm and they are great too.
JustFluxzI've been wanting the Amirons for ages, and I just refuse to buy them. There is a threshold you cross where you hear EVERYTHING in a recording and you just can't hear more. If you're a producer or a sound engineer, you know that fact. Things get different, not better. It's just a game of tastes.
raansire7I bought my Amirons on Ebay from an official retailers page. I offered to buy it for lower than MSRP of $600, and my initial offer was declined, but my second offer of $450 was accepted. I've never spent more than $500 on a pair of headphones despite there being so many over that price point that I want or want to try.
