They are quite different. The X1 are somewhat dark sounding while the 990 are bright. X1 are easy to drive while the 990 need alot of power on the 600 ohm model. Besides that the X1 are very forgiving with poor recording and will sound very good with modern, the 990 however sound awesome on high quality records and different genres. Sorry for bad English :p
